Lower Manhattan Commercial Cleaning Tips & Tricks

1/25/2023 (Permalink)

Cleaning a business is nothing like cleaning a home. You can’t just throw extra things in a closet and plan to deal with it during spring cleaning… we know you do it, most people do. When it comes to a business, you need to make sure everything is up to par for the sake of you, your employees, and customers/clients. Here are some tips and tricks for cleaning your lower Manhattan commercial business!

Hire a Professional
First off, it’s smart to just hire a professional to get this done for you. The last thing you need is to add cleaning to your busy plate. Plus, professionals will come in with the best equipment and understand exactly what needs to be done and how to do it. When it comes to SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan, we can take care of carpet & upholstery cleaning, air duct cleaning, odor removal, and sewage & biohazard cleanup.

Get the Right Products
If you are, in fact, handling the cleaning on your own - be sure to choose the right products. You want to look for non-toxic cleaners if you own a place of business that sells or makes food, and all-natural disinfectants will keep the areas safe for your customers/clients and employees.

Staying on top of disinfecting is important, especially while we live in the world of Covid-19. Make sure there are hand sanitizers in many places around the building and ensure every surface is cleaned after each day. A clean work environment is a safe work environment.

Clean the Air Ducts
Professional duct cleaners will see to it your ducts are clean and sanitized properly. This is going to be particularly effective when you increase your business’ ventilation. When people talk, sing, cough, or sneeze, respiratory droplets are released. To keep your employees safe, ventilation should be increased. Have an HVAC professional help you adjust.

Graffiti & Vandalism Cleanup
Vandalism and graffiti can be very upsetting, especially if it occurs to your business in Manhattan. It can range from minor pranks to malicious destruction of property. Often simple acts of vandalism, like breaking a window, can cause significant water and mold damage if not addressed in a timely manner. We will act quickly to remove this from your commercial space. In addition to removing spray-painted graffiti from exterior walls, we can also clean driveways, walkways, asphalt, metals, wood, glass, plastics, and masonry.

How to Prepare Your Lower Manhattan Business for a Winter Storm

1/12/2023 (Permalink)

Winter storms can be a nightmare, especially if you live on the east coast. If you own a business in the lower Manhattan area, you’ll need the best tips and tricks on how to properly prepare for winter storms. SERVPRO is not only here to give you those tips, but we’re here to help you clean up as well. Let’s check out those tips, shall we?

Check Out the Full Weather Advisory
Ahead of the storm, it’s a good idea to look into the full winter weather advisory before preparing. If your area is only supposed to get some flurries, you don’t need to prepare as much. However, if you see anything in the list below - it’s time to assemble the troops.

  1. Possible road closures
  2. Freezing rain/sleet
  3. Heavy snowfall
  4. Possible power outages
  5. Freezing temperatures

Put Together an Emergency Kit
In case you’re still at your business during a winter storm, compiling a list of items for an emergency kit will be comforting to you and whomever is there with you. Be sure to pack blankets, a supply of food and water, candles, flashlights, a first aid kit, and a shovel.

Check Out Your Inventory
Before the storm hits, ensure that you are taking inventory of your supplies, products, technology, etc. Take pictures of everything as well - this is all in preparation for possible damage during the winter storm. Why is this important? Insurance reasons.

Check Your Insurance Coverage
Assuming damage occurs to your business, you’ll have the before pictures to present to your insurance company. If there is damage, before cleaning it up, take as many pictures as you can. You’ll be able to provide proof to your insurance company so you can be covered.

Other Preparations
Grab bags of salt for walkways so ice doesn’t accumulate, be prepared for snow removal - whether that will be your job or if you plan on hiring a company that will help clean up and inspect for any damage that can go unseen (roof damage, structural damage, water, mold, etc.)

To keep your business safe from a winter storm, please follow the tips provided. If you need help with restoration, SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan can help.

Water Damage Causes in Your Lower Manhattan Commercial Facility

12/16/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage in your Lower Manhattan commercial facility can be detrimental to your business. It’s important to know the causes of water damage and how to effectively restore the building to prevent additional damage, such as mold.

Here are some top causes of water structural water damage (and later, what you can do about it):

Deteriorating Plumbing & Burst Pipes

How old is the plumbing in your building and when is the last time the pipes, sprinklers, toilets, etc. were replaced? Old plumbing is the cause of many water damage instances, so if you believe it’s time to replace the old with the new, do it before it’s too late.

Burst pipes are also a leading cause of water damage, especially in the winter months. If the pipes freeze, there’s a large chance that they will burst if the necessary actions are not taken.

Natural Disasters

Severe weather like hurricanes, flooding, and even blizzards can cause a tremendous amount of water damage. If your business is in a vulnerable place, or not prepared for a large storm, the chance of water damage is high. There are ways you can try to protect your building if you know a bad storm is coming, but if it’s bad enough - you may be looking for a restoration company after the damage has been done.

Roof Problems

Ensure that you get your roof inspected at least once a year. A roof leak can lead to even bigger problems like mold, structural damage, and more. If you do have a leak, get it fixed as soon as possible to avoid more damage.

HVAC System Malfunctions

Like all machines, building HVAC systems are subject to wear and tear as time passes and this will ultimately inhibit their performance. When your cooling/heating system stops operating, cracks or leaks can appear within its drains and pipes. This in turn will lead to the leakage of liquid outside the unit which can get all over the floor and become a slip and fall hazard and cause mold, and water damage to the floor and surrounding objects.

Check the Windows

If there are any cracks in the windows of your commercial business building, seal them up as soon as possible. This can cause unwanted liquid and moisture to get inside. This is why experts recommend inspecting every seal and window and if problems are found they should be fixed immediately.

Holiday Safety Tips to Prevent Fires in Your Lower Manhattan Home

12/13/2022 (Permalink)

‘Tis the season for mistletoes, holiday music, and mall madness. However, ‘tis also the season for house fires.

Although the holiday season is desirable and warms your hearts, it’s important to remember the hazards that may come with it. SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan wants to provide you with holiday safety tips to prevent fires in your Lower Manhattan home.

Space Heaters

Whether you have a space heater from the 90s that is still kicking or a new, visually appealing fireplace heater, they should never be unattended. Here are some tips to help you avoid a fire due to your heater.

  • Never turn on a heater you suspect is damaged.
  • Before use, inspect the heater, power cord, and plug for any damage.
  • Never leave the heater operating while unattended, or while you’re sleeping.
  • Keep materials such as beds, sofas, curtains, papers, and clothes at least 3 feet from the front, top, sides, and back of the heater.
  • Make sure the heater plug fits tightly into the outlet - if not, don’t use this outlet. Poor electrical connections are another leading cause of fires.
  • Ensure that the heater is placed on a stable, level surface and located where it will not be knocked over.

Christmas Trees

One of the deadliest types of fires that occurs during the holiday season involves live Christmas trees. Here are some tips to help you avoid Christmas tree fires.

  • Always make sure your tree is properly watered
  • Check for electrical issues and broken bulbs when hanging lights on the tree.
  • Remove heat sources in close proximity to the tree.
  • Unplug your tree when you’re not home and overnight.

There’s nothing like sitting in front of a fire, sipping cocoa, and watching a holiday movie. Keep fires from reaching outside the fireplace with these safety tips:

  • Clean up build-up and ash before lighting a new fire.
  • Schedule an annual chimney inspection before the season.
  • Use safe fire starters - this includes well-seasoned hardwood or CSIA-approved logs.
  • For kindling, stick to fired twigs or branches
  • Ensure all of the embers are completely burnt out before heading to bed.

What to Do For Your Manhattan Business: Mold Removal vs. Mold Remediation

11/29/2022 (Permalink)

What to Do For Your Manhattan Business: Mold Removal vs. Mold Remediation

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

A qualified restoration company understands the science behind mold and mold growth. SERVPRO franchise professionals have the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business. Mold remediation focuses on getting mold levels back to normal, natural levels.

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. Here are the steps so you can further understand our mold remediation process:

Step 1: Emergency Contact 1-800-TEAMHRV

Step 2: Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

Step 3: Mold Containment

Step 4: Air Filtration

Step 5: Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

Step 6: Cleaning Contents and Belongings

Step 7: Restoration

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems, or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants and have the potential to cause other health effects.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

When it comes to your business, it is extremely important to understand mold and what to do so you, your employees, and your clients/customers are safe. SERVPRO professionals are skilled and trained to deal with all types of mold, water damage restoration, storm damage restoration, and much more.

Winter storms can cause a lot of damage to your commercial business property, so quick action is critical. If you’re able to leave your home and check out your business - there are steps you can take prior to the storm hitting to make the recovery process run smoothly. Here are 5 steps to guide lower Manhattan commercial business owners in dealing with winter storm damage.

Be Calm

We’re able to help with water damage restoration, fire damage restoration, mold remediation, cleaning services, and we’re specifically trained in storm and major events cleanup

Cut the Water & Power

If you’re familiar with your breakers, turning off your water and power connection will help tremendously prior to or during the storm, especially if a flood is involved. Be sure to check your pipes as well due to winter storms causing them to leak or burst. Assuming this has already happened and a flood occurred, we’re here for you!

Take Pictures

It’s a good idea to take pictures and videos of your commercial property before the storm hits. This will help when you’re coordinating with your insurance company, your chosen restoration company, and with any vendors you may use for products that are under warranty. When you’re taking these pictures and videos, make sure there is a timestamp on the footage as well to ensure that any damage that has occurred due to the storm was because of the storm - this will eliminate any back-and-forth with your insurance company.

Contact Insurance Company

After the storm has hit, you’ll want to contact your insurance company as soon as possible to file a claim. Get those forms filled out, provide your photos and videos, and wait for instruction on the next steps. Remember to keep track of the personnel you talked to and their position with the insurance company, phone numbers you contacted, date and time of the transaction, initial agreements, and any other critical information from the discussion.

Contact a Trusted Restoration Company

Now that you’ve gotten everything figured out with your insurance, it’s a good time to contact a water restoration company. Make sure you do your research on one that you can trust - like SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan. Be sure that the company you choose can do everything that needs to be done and begin the process.

Why Immediate Storm Damage Repair Needs to be a Priority

9/13/2022 (Permalink)

Why Immediate Storm Damage Repair Needs to be a Priority

Storm damage may be inevitable if a heavy storm has blown through your neighborhood. While this is an unfortunate reality, there are steps you can take to minimize the impact of a storm and prevent additional storm damage from occurring.  One way to do this is by getting storm damage repairs done as soon as possible. This will ensure that your building remains structurally sound and safe. Why is it important to make immediate storm damage repair a priority? We’ll show you below.

Storm Damage Repair for Mold Prevention

No one wants mold to develop in their home or building. A mold infestation hinders the integrity of any structure, which can make it unsafe, risky, and expensive! Buildings that experience water damage events are prone to mold exposure, which can come on fast or may take time to develop. Either way, the presence of mold is bad and needs to be taken care of immediately. The best thing to do is to address the storm damage before mold starts to grow so you can prevent it from even becoming an issue.

Neglected Storm Damage Repairs Can Get Expensive

Some people think they can wait on storm damage repairs, but that’s a major mistake. The longer you wait, the more damage will occur, whether it’s through mold or other problems.

Storm damage repair costs may seem like a lot of money initially, but they will be significantly less expensive than if you let the damages linger.  For example, let's say your roof leaks during a big downpour. Ignoring this for an extended amount of time could result in you having to replace the entire roof and perhaps even walls and ceilings if the water damage issue spreads. By acting fast and getting a storm damage repair service team to fix things early, however, you could prevent more expensive repairs and maintain the overall safety of your home.

Small Leaks from Storm Damage Can Turn into Catastrophic Damage

You may be wondering how a small leak could cause such major damage to a home or other building. While patching up a leak could seem like a quick fix, that’s rarely the case following a massive storm. Water damage from storms can be severe and could erode wood and drywall, rot out joists, and cause mold to grow. What started as a small, innocent leak could turn into a serious problem if it goes unattended for too long.

The best way to keep your home safe during storms is to keep an eye on your gutters and downspouts and ensure that they are draining properly. If you haven't installed gutters or downspouts, now's the time! This will help keep rainwater from flooding through your roofing system into your walls, where it can start doing some serious damage before you know it.

If your home or building experiences damage as a result of a storm, the best thing you can do is hire a professional team to perform storm damage repairs done as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that additional damages will occur.

Need storm damage repairs? Call in the professionals at SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan. We’re here to help you through the entire process. Contact us today to get started.

Having Difficulty Tracking Odors Inside Your Home?

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

Some homeowners find themselves in a situation where an unusual and unpleasant odor is detected on the premises but they are unable to identify the exact source of the smell. Below are some tips that can help you identify the unwanted scent so you can contact the appropriate residential odor removal services.

This has a distinct and unmistakable smell. It could be a sign that your P-trap is dried out. A P-trap consists of the miniature curved portion of piping that aids in creating a seal for the sewage gas which is present behind it. However, the P-trap must be water-filled to produce the needed blockage.

Homeowners that don’t regularly use their sinks might cause the water which usually produces the seal to evaporate and then dry out, causing sewage gases to rise into the home. To prevent this, all you need to do is run water in each drain periodically, about once each month.

Egg Rot

The smell of egg rot or sulfur is definitely not pleasant and is a sign that something is seriously wrong. It usually means you either have an electrical problem or a gas leak. Manufacturers of natural gas are mandated to add a special chemical named mercaptan inside so that it is easier to perform leak detection. When this additive isn’t present, it won’t be possible to smell, taste, or see natural gas. So if you detect the infamous rotten egg smell, the first thing you’ll want to do is check with your gas company.

Aside from gas leaks, the smell of rotted eggs can also result from faulty electrical systems. If you’ve checked for a gas leak and none is present, the next thing you’ll want to do is try shutting down your circuit breaker. Additionally, the smell of rotted eggs might come from running out of hot water. This is because you probably have an aging anode rod that needs to be replaced. Experts recommend replacing anode rods once every five years or so otherwise corrosion can occur, but many property owners are busy, and getting a replacement is easy to forget.

Stale Air

If you notice that the air in your home seems stale, this is often the result of air leakage. Does your home have an attic with recessed lights? If so this form of illumination is susceptible to leakage and if this is the case the leak will need to be sealed.

Fishy Smell

If you don’t have any seafood in your home or garbage, a fishy smell often results from electrical components which are overheating. If the plastic, wiring, or other electrical devices smells like sulfur or rotted fish, this means that you potentially have a dangerous situation on your hand like arcing within a switch or outlet that can lead to a fire. As you can imagine, this is not something you want to handle on your own, as you run the risk of being electrocuted or burned, so it is highly recommended to contact an expert immediately.

Is It Possible To Minimize Hurricane Damage?

8/1/2022 (Permalink)

Hurricanes are a grim reality, particularly if you reside in the Gulf of Mexico or the eastern seaboard. Every year, they number in the double digits. For your family, property, and your home, damage can be costly and severe where the consequences of hurricanes are concerned. Permanent water damage can be caused by flooding that goes untreated. A mold infestation could be introduced into your home.

All is not lost, however. You can minimize hurricane damage. To protect your home, starting today, there's a lot you can do. The next time disaster strikes, you'll be able to relieve stress and save money with the right preventative measures.

Annual Inspections

Every year, you may wish to have a comprehensive home inspection done to make sure you stay on top of hurricane damage risks. Hidden dangers can lurk even if your roof seems sound, structurally. As much as possible, your basement should be watertight.

Flood Insurance

You may not be able to stop a flood, but you should be able to insure your home against the devastation of one. Make sure you have the right kind of insurance in place if you are in an area that experiences torrential rains, tsunamis, hurricanes, and other acts of God.

Safety Proof Your Yard

When you know a hurricane is threatening, prepare your yard. Grills, patio furniture, fallen trees, etc. can become missiles, capable of going through the side of your home or a window during a hurricane.

Electrocution and electrical fires are a serious threat, even amid a rainy hurricane. To decrease electrical fire risks, unplug devices. If water pools in your home, steer clear of it in case it comes in contact with an electrical source.

Roof Safety

Rooftops have been ripped right off of buildings due to hurricane updrafts. During storms, keep your roof tightly in place with specially designed hurricane straps.

Garage Door Safety

To support the garage door and hold it down, on the door jams, at an angle, place several sturdy boards. You may also wish to invest in garage braces.

To get them out of harm's way, relocate window air conditioners, stereos, TVs, computers, and other appliances. The attic is a good place to keep them away from floodwater.

Does Your Home Have a Safe?

To keep all of your important documentation free from harm – even in a flood – invest in a watertight safe. Your attic is a good location for the safe to help keep it away from floodwater.

You can attempt to keep flooding/blowing water out of your home by using sandbags in front of your exterior doors. For maximum protection, put the sandbags around the perimeter of your house, too.

Shattering, sharp glass can be one of the most serious dangers when hurricanes hit. It can damage furniture and floors, destroy walls, and endanger your family. When the forecast becomes dire, you can quickly close window coverings referred to as storm shutters. Don't wait until hurricane season hits to have them installed.

Understanding Water Damage Causes In Commercial Facilities

6/27/2022 (Permalink)

While water damage can cause significant problems in residential buildings, for commercial facilities the trouble is multiplied since it poses threats to both clients and employees and can also disrupt business operations. Below are some common water damage causes in commercial facilities.

Deteriorating Plumbing or Burst Pipes

If the plumbing within your commercial building is decades old, there is a good chance you’ll sustain water damage at some point. Pipes in particular are vulnerable to cracking and bursting especially during winter when they can freeze. A pipe that becomes covered in rust is also vulnerable. Signs of plumbing problems include a sprinkler system that is leaking or there is leakage from bathroom toilets.

Severe Weather

If you own a commercial building or business in an area that is known for powerful storms such as tornadoes or hurricanes, the structure should be designed to withstand them and you should carry the proper insurance. While it isn’t completely possible to prevent the damage that storms and flooding can cause, there are certain precautions that can be taken, like properly maintaining and cleaning gutters as well as verifying the effectiveness of the drainage unit.

The Roof is Leaking

A roof is designed to protect a building, but because it is the first line of defense and directly exposed to the elements, water might seep in via miniature openings that can be difficult or even impossible to detect with the naked eye. If the leak is continually exposed to liquid, it will grow in size and worsen, which will ultimately magnify the damage. This is why if you, your employees, or customers detect a leak, you should immediately contact a professional for assistance.

The HVAC System Has Malfunctioned

Like all machines, building HVAC systems are subject to wear and tear as time passes and this will ultimately inhibit their performance. When your cooling/heated system stops operating in the manner designed, cracks or leaks can appear within its drains and pipes. This in turn will lead to the leakage of liquid outside the unit which can get all over the floor and become a slip and fall hazard.

The Windows Are Damaged

Like the roof, your windows play a key role in preventing moisture and the elements from entering the building. However, in order to do this effectively, the window must remain sealed. Should the seal become cracked or damaged, this creates a scenario where unwanted liquid and moisture will get inside, where it can damage ceilings, walls, and floors, and potentially create mold issues if not handled promptly. This is why experts recommend inspecting every seal and window and if problems are found they should be fixed immediately.

Why It Is Important to Hire a Professional

While some homeowners attempt to resolve water damage themselves to save money, this is definitely not recommended for commercial establishments. By hiring a company like SERVPRO, you’ll be working with professionals who have been specifically trained to handle these issues and because of their speed and equipment, they will get your business up and running again as soon as possible.

Learn How To Recover Quickly From A Fire Disaster

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

Realistically, no one can ever be really prepared for a house fire or any form of disaster. It can literally start for various reasons, at anytime and anywhere - it’s truly one of the worst tragedies which can occur to anyone. While we hope you would never have to experience it, you have to prepare to get ready for it. Here are some tips on how you can hasten your restoration process after a fire disaster.

Contact Your Insurance Agent as Early as Possible

The first thing after the aftermath should be to call your insurance agent to inform them of the incident so they can communicate the details of your coverage. Ensure that certain policy inclusions are not overlooked like temporary accommodation assistances. You would have to also discuss the claims process and inform the agent of your intention to engage fire restoration services. Wait for approval from your insurance company before going ahead with any decision.

Ask for A Copy of The Fire Report

The fire report consists of the crucial details and information that are essential in your process of the insurance claim. Do request to make a copy of it, it wouldn’t be a problem since fire reports are public documents.

Start The Mitigation Process

After a fire, there are many damages to the property that may potentially pose a health or safety risk for you. While it’s essential to start the mitigation process early, you should let a fire damage mitigation professional handle it for you as it’s not something you can do by yourself.

Keep A Record of All The Damaged Items

A typical homeowner’s insurance will cover the costs of replacing your damaged items. Insurers usually request an inventory list of your damaged personal items due to the fire. As you do that, take photographs of your items for additional proof. Wherever possible, include any online statements, brief descriptions, prices, and dates of purchase.

If you lose important documents like your passport, driver’s license, deeds, titles, and birth certificates, replace them immediately. Some of them are needed in your claims process.

Clean Your Property And Move Undamaged Items

Start the first phase of cleaning which is removing the soot, dust, and smoke odor that remain trapped in the surfaces. Usually, the odors are quite stubborn and do require professionals with the necessary equipment to completely remove the odor from your home. Them, segregate your undamaged items from those severely damaged, to set them up for cleaning. Otherwise, you should dispose of those that have been soaked in water or too badly burnt.

What You Need To Know About Leaking Dishwashers

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

Both commercial and residential property owners may encounter leaking dishwashers at some point. Before the issue can be resolved by SERVPRO technicians, you’ll need to unplug it then deactivate its circuit breaker. Additionally, be sure your watered supply valve has been closed, which can usually be located beneath your kitchen sink. Below are some common reasons dishwashers leak.

The Connections Are Damaged or Loose

Dishwashers are made with hoses, valves, and connections that are vulnerable to becoming loose or damaged as time passes. If you notice that the valves or hoses have become cracked or defective, they will need to be replaced, and it is important to ensure the clamps are of the proper size and have the strength needed to keep each hose in position even under pressure.

Your Float Switch Is No Longer Working

The float assembly is an important dishwasher component that uses a float switch and floats for the regulation of internal liquid levels during rinse and washes cycles. Once the dishwasher has completed its cycles, its float is supposed to lift up with rising liquid. After researching a specific height, it must trigger a float switch to deactivate the water. However, should the switch become faulty, its water level may become too high, resulting in leakage and mold. The solution to this problem is replacing the faulty float switch, but doing it yourself can be challenging.

The Dishwasher’s Door is Leaking

If you notice liquid pooling right beneath the dishwasher’s door, this could be a sign that the door itself is the source of the leak. Its latch might be loose or bent, which is preventing it from functioning normally. A screwdriver can be used for tightening the latch and allowing the door to close completely. In extreme cases, it might become necessary to buy and then install a brand new latch unit. If the gasket is damaged, it will have to be replaced, but the replacement should be soaked in warm and soapy water first so that it has greater flexibility and is simpler to manipulate when installing.

You’re Using Incorrect Detergent

This is a common mistake made by those who are not familiar with dishwashers. Standard soap will foam up excessively and because many dishwashers can’t handle it, leaks are the inevitable result. The solution to this problem is to review the dish soap you’re currently using and make sure it is compatible with your dishwasher. If you aren’t sure, read the manual that came with the machine and if you’ve lost it you can probably find a digital version online at the manufacturer’s website.

Your Dishwasher’s Spray Arm Has Malfunctioned

The dishwasher’s spray arm will spin during rinse and wash cycles, spraying the water onto the contents inside. However, if the dishwasher is improperly loaded or overcrowded, the dishes and utensils might block its arm, which won’t be able to correctly rotate since it’s become damaged or dislodged resulting in leakage. If this is the case you’ll probably have to buy and install a brand new spray arm, which can be purchased online.

Did You Find Mold On Popcorn Ceilings?

4/21/2022 (Permalink)

Most mold strains are so minuscule that they can actually be airborne and can settle in all kinds of places. With the right conditions in the presence of moisture, they can germinate easily. Popcorn ceilings are popular due to their distinctive texture that is used to cover up any imperfections in the ceiling. But due to its surface, it is also typically extremely easy to attract mold spores to settle in them and grow into an active colony. Here are some tips for you if you find mold on popcorn ceilings in your home.

How Do I Prevent Mold on My Popcorn Ceiling?

Moisture is a crucial element in the germination of mold. To prevent their growth, you need to keep in mind to ventilate all around your home properly. Some ways can include using the kitchen’s range top vent whenever you are cooking or boiling water, or turning on the bathroom fan for about five to ten minutes after taking a shower. By reducing moisture in the air, it prevents the water vapor from rising and saturating into your popcorn ceiling during evaporation.

Strategic Use of Dehumidifiers

Additionally, underground bedrooms and basements can be vulnerable to the development of bold due to increased moisture, especially during summer when humidity and ambient temperatures are higher. You can counter this by simply placing a dehumidifier in those areas to reduce the level of moisture.

Make Necessary Repairs

Another way moisture can accumulate in your popcorn ceiling is due to a minor roof leak, a clogged gutter, or water leaking into the attic. With time, the accumulated water can saturate your ceiling texture, laying the foundations for increased mold germination.

If there’s damage or an issue, you should almost immediately think about repair solutions before a greater amount of water accumulates and causes a larger mold problem in your home, especially on your popcorn ceiling. Even for plumbing issues, a minor pipe leak in the bathroom upstairs can cause the growth of mold in the ceiling beneath it.

Can I Remove Mold from My Popcorn Ceiling?

If mold does appear on your ceilings, don’t give in to your temptations to paint over them to make them look good. It doesn’t remove the mold; it will also further exacerbate the problem. You can clean it yourself if it’s an early development of mold, by mixing water with a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda. Apply the solution onto the surface and let it sit for a few minutes, before brushing or sponging the affected area. Ventilate the area and let the surface dry thoroughly.

Easy And Fuss-free Clean-up And Restoration Services at SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan/Financial District

If you have a more significant mold problem, it’s best to let the professionals do it for you. Here at SERVPRO Manhattan, our expert, experienced technicians are well-trained and have the required equipment to provide the proper mold remediation and restoration on your popcorn wall. Before help arrives, review these mold damage tips to learn more about what you should and shouldn’t do.

Is Your Hotel Maintaining Proper Sanitation Standards?

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

Throughout the planet, to flatten the curve and slow the spread of the coronavirus, communities are working together. While more and more businesses reopen, more cautious steps than in the past are being taken. When will it be okay to travel and meet in groups again? Is it already? Particularly when it comes to events, hotel stays, etc., a new normal will obviously apply.

Regarding hotel sanitation, to create a safer environment for employees and guests, new sanitation and health plans are being unveiled. Various companies are including disinfecting and cleaning on a more frequent basis in public areas and rooms. What's more, personal protective equipment and additional safety training is being given to employees. It may be necessary, at each property, to appoint hygiene officers or managers and employ the use of new technologies (UV light, thermal cameras, etc.).

Another way of seeing to it that your hotel is completely sanitized, safe, and healthy for all parties concerned, is to leave all of the cleaning, inspecting, use of high-tech tools, and more, to a reputable, dependable cleaning and sanitizing service. Later, we'll tell you about the best commercial sanitation company for the job. In the meantime, let's take a look at what's being done to sanitize hotels against the spread of the coronavirus.

New Safety and Health Protocols

Businesses are caring for their guests and employees through the use of new safety and health protocols. Some of these are as follows:

  • Events and meetings – Set up should be reworked. Entry and exit flow should be organized. As much as possible, collaborate on menus and meals with as much creativity and variety as possible.
  • It is possible to change the channel on a television using a smart phone app (Sonifi). Guests will be encouraged to download it if desired.
  • Elevator rides – For each ride, passenger numbers will be limited. In all elevators, masks/face coverings are required.
  • The high traffic guest areas, meeting rooms, elevator landings, fitness centers, spas, front desks, and more, hand sanitizer stations have been added.
  • Prior to entering the hotel, vendors and employees will undergo temperature checks.
  • Masks/face coverings must be worn by all employees and guests.

For events and meetings, customer service initiative and cleanliness initiatives have been launched. Three key points are as follows:

  • Socially responsible, safe solutions – From room sets to meal service, hotels will offer creative physical distancing solutions.
  • Flexibility regarding book-to-billing – This includes contract terms, space options, and providing flexible pricing while working with customers. To meet the needs of customers, the program will feature responsive offers.
  • Protocols for cleanliness – New standards will be outlined and adhered to regarding disinfection and cleanliness protocols for meetings and events. This includes, in meeting spaces and public areas, sanitation stations. It also includes sealing sanitized/ready meeting rooms.

There are, of course, additional protocols being put in place depending on the hotel, the area in which the hotel exists, the CDC recommendations currently in place, and more. But if you want to make sure your hotel is as sanitized, clean, and healthy as it can be – and it is kept in that condition on a continuing basis – go with the best service money can buy.

An Introduction to Carpet Bonnet Cleaning

3/31/2022 (Permalink)

If you’ve ever spent time in a hotel lobby, commercial building, etc., during late-night hours, you’ve likely seen a staff member or service operating a device that uses a spinning pad to polish and buff concrete, linoleum, or tile floors. These are used frequently in commercial establishments.

Somewhere along the line, someone decided that the same cleaning process might work well for carpets. It is referred to as carpet bonnet cleaning and uses the same type of rotary machine, more or less, but concentrates on carpets rather than hard floors. Initially, the bonnet – made of propylene, rayon, or cotton - is attached to the rotary machine and soaked with shampoo. Over the carpet, they move the machine back and forth. The carpet is significantly cleaner once it has dried. In theory.

A Temporary Fix at Best

The thing about bonnet cleaning is that it's pretty much just a topical solution. You’re taking surface dirt and essentially scraping it off. If you know anything about stains, you know that to remove them, scrubbing is not usually the best method. Rather than removing the stain, further into the carpet, the stain ends up being ground down and in. That's pretty much what's going on with bonnet cleaning. You’re scrubbing your stains – that used to be on the surface – deeper down into your carpet. Who wants that?

Yes, it does dislodge and collect dirt from the surface to a point, but again, it's also pushing some of it deeper into the pile.

After bonnet cleaning, the carpet does dry fast (one of the more attractive points of bonnet cleaning), and it looks clean. But think about this… Anything that came off the carpet, but doesn't appear on the bonnet, actually just stayed in the carpeting. There is no extraction method with bonnet cleaning.

But Wait… There's More!

In case you're not convinced that bonnet cleaning isn't the best way to go about refreshing your carpet, here's some additional information.

You can't just walk into the bonnet cleaning process if you've never done it before. Here's why:

  • Friction burns could result from dry hard carpet scrubbing because not enough detergent was used.
  • You will need to vacuum up residue that stays behind after the carpet dries – because you'll notice swirl marks – if there’s too much shampoo or detergent.
  • Various carpet designs call for specific types of bonnets.
  • Mildew and mold can build up in bonnets if they are not regularly laundered after use.
  • Because this type of cleaning needs to be done so often, it offsets the savings you thought you would enjoy.
  • Lastly, you may well void the warranty on your carpet if you use bonnet cleaning. This is a policy for some carpet manufacturers.

So how do you feel about bonnet cleaning your carpet now? There is a better solution…

Need Thorough Carpet Bonnet Cleaning? Call SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan/Financial District!

Common Air Duct Contaminants

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

Most residential and commercial property owners take their air ducts for granted. So long as cold and hot air is emitted when desired with no chemical or burning scent, most people are content. However, air duct contaminants can become a real problem and it must be addressed.

Ductwork is the perfect conduit for warm air during winter and cool air during summer. This makes it an attractive nesting spot for many insects and rodents, some of which might spread pathogens and cause other damage. Unless you enjoy rats, mice or roaches suddenly showing up in your property, you’ll probably want to have your ductwork cleaned regularly.

Dander, Dirt And Dust

These are the most frequent contaminants that you’ll find in typical ductwork. Textiles such as furniture and carpets often generate dust and dirt will gain entry through windows and doors that are opened. Dander is the result of hair and skin cells that are shed by both animals and people.

The good news is that the majority of dirt, dust, and dander are removed during standard vacuuming and cleaning. The bad news is that because they consist of particles that readily become airborne, your air ducts will suck them in. While HVAC systems have filters that are capable of capturing the particulates in varying quantities, there is still plenty that will end up in the ducts, accumulating as the months and years go by.

Mold can be found in virtually every home, from studio apartments to penthouses and mansions. However, most forms are relatively harmless to humans and pets. They result from condensation within ducts which frequently occurs because of insufficient insulation. Once mold colonies form, they will contaminate the air of the interior each time the HVAC system is activated. There is also rare black and green mold that is considered a biohazard and if they appear in your home you’ll need to evacuate so the property can be professionally cleaned.

Allergens And Pollen

Both airborne allergens and pollens behave similarly to dirt, duster, and dander, appearing within air ducts. While some of it comes from outside the building, others will be generated from within. Either way, both will compromise the quality of your indoor air and can cause some serious effects on your health.

As you can see, there are at least five contaminants that can appear in your building’s ductwork. Commercial property owners, in particular, must be careful because businesses are required by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) to create a safe working environment for employees. If your commercial building is found to have contaminants in the ductwork that is harming employees or customers, it can threaten your business and potentially lead to fines and litigation, not to mention a loss of reputation.

This is why regular cleaning of your ductwork is so important, but because the task can be tedious, it is best to hire a professional like SERVPRO that has the expertise, equipment, and credentials needed to get the job done right.

Introducing Our Submersible Water Pumps

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

When it comes to repairing and restoring water damage, submersible water pumps are an integral part of the water extraction stage. Submersible water pumps are a key piece of equipment thanks to their powerful pumping abilities and range of sizes and capacities – no matter your specific needs, there will surely be a submersible water pump that’s right for the job.

If you’d like to learn more about that submersible water pumps that highly trained professional restoration specialists use, you’ve come to the right place. Read on for a quick summary of what submersible water pumps are and how they work.

What Are Submersible Water Pumps?

As its name might suggest, a submersible water pump is a type of pump that can be fully submerged in water. This is achieved by constructing the pump such that body of the pump is firmly coupled to the motor, and keeping the motor fully sealed with an airtight seal. There are plenty of different types of submersible pumps, each with a different application.

Submersible pumps are designed to prevent one of the most common problems associated with removing water called pump cavitation, which is when an air bubble forms due to different elevations of the pump and fluid surface. Furthermore, submersible water pumps are more energy-efficient than other types of pumps like jet pumps; they use water pressure to push fluids to the surface for removal, whereas jet pumps pull fluids downwards to be removed.

Submersible pumps are also quieter and less prone to overheating than other water pumps since they are fully submerged under the water surface. The full submersion of the pumps also means that they never need to be primed as well, making them a great investment when it comes to water removal.

How Submersible Water Pumps Work

Submersible water pumps first pull water into the pump via the foot valve, and the water then strikes the blades of the impeller in the pump. The speed of the water flow increases as it hits the blades of the impeller.

The rotations of the impeller then push the water into the diffuser, which converts the kinetic energy and speed of the water into pressure, causing the water to be pushed to the surface as it is discharged from the outlet valve of the submersible water pump. Once the water has reached the surface, it can be safely and quickly removed.

Uses of Submersible Water Pumps

Thanks to their versatility, different types of submersible water pumps are installed for different use cases. Single-stage submersible water pumps are suitable for uses like sewage pumping, draining, and other industrial uses. Multiple-stage submersible water pumps, which are typically lowered down into a borehole, are commonly seen in residential, commercial, and industrial water extraction.

With all these points in mind, we hope that you have a clearer picture of just how useful submersible water pumps are when professionally repairing and restoring water damage. If you’d like to learn more about water damage repair or any of the professional restoration and cleaning services we offer, SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan/Financial District is here to help! Why Are There Water Streaks On Your Walls?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

Water streaks on your walls can look unsightly. However, the problem is often bigger than just an eyesore as they could indicate mold growth, rot, and water leakages behind the wall. It is thus important to have this problem resolved as soon as possible. Water streaks on your walls could also be signs of inadequate drainage of water and condensation. Here are some of the reasons for water streaks on your walls.

Inadequate Home Ventilation

Proper home ventilation will help to remove pollutants, control heat and remove excess moisture in the environment. If your home has a persistent moisture problem and water streaks on your walls, you should try to increase your ventilation to fix the problem. For example, you can use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom or other humid areas to increase air circulation and ensure proper ventilation. Do remember that exhaust fans should be vented to the exterior and not the interior.

Condensation occurs when there is a large temperature difference between the air outside and the air inside your home. This causes condensation on interior surfaces in your houses such as walls and windows. Over time, this condensation can contribute to water streaks on your walls.

The good news is those condensation problems are relatively minor and easier to fix as compared to water leakages. You can use dehumidifiers, improve your ventilation system or exhaust systems to fix condensation issues, thereby preventing excess moisture from building in your house and on surfaces.

Roof Leaks and Ice Dams

If your roof has a leakage, water can thus seep into your home or inner walls. Cracked masonry, walls, or other damaged building structures may also contribute to the excess build-up of moisture. If you frequently observe wet patches or water streaks on your walls after heavy rain or storm, the likely culprit would be roof leaks.

It is thus important to get your roof repaired and to seek professional help as your roof may deteriorate over time. Roof leaks may also occur due to damaged roofs from improper installation and damage from heavy weather such as storms.

Ice dams can also cause roof damage and leaks in colder climates. This is because heavy snowfalls, paired with damaged roofs, or inadequate roof structures, insulation, and ventilation would contribute to ice dams. Ice dams occur when the snow on the roof melts and seeps or leaks into the roof, or your interior walls via a crack or crevice on the roof. If you observe water streaks occurring on the walls in the top of rooms which are located on the highest story, it may be due to an ice dam and roof leakage.

Is It A Good Idea To Handle Water Damage On My Own?

10/13/2021 (Permalink)

Threatening the integrity of a building and endangering those within, flooding can result from numerous causes. Faulty plumbing, broken appliances, storms, and more can result in flooding and water damage. Once the water source has discontinued – either naturally or through repair – what's left? Pooled water, damage to floors, walls, structures, and more can be the final product of a flood or even a slow but prolonged leak.

After water damage, can you restore your home or company building yourself? This can be a tricky business and poses dangers of a varying nature. Safety measures must be taken, some expertise must be applied, the gravity of the situation must be recognized in no uncertain terms – the list goes on.

Let's take a look at water damage and how to handle it.

What Are the Damaged Materials?

Water can damage everything it touches, no matter what kind of building the leakage and/or damage occurs in. Everything inside or involved in the structure is prone to harm including devices, wiring, the floor, walls, etc. To know whether or not this clean-up is a do-it-yourself project, you must survey the extent of damage.

Is the drywall damaged? For days following a leak or flood, drywall can hold on to water. This can threaten the integrity of a building. To make your walls and ceiling look like new again, complete replacement of plaster/drywall may be necessary.

Some areas might just need some drying out. You may be able to salvage wooden pillars, furniture, etc., but this is on a case-by-case basis. Most often, after flooding, electrical appliances and carpeting will need to be removed and disposed of properly.

If you suspect possible damage with asbestos, call a professional immediately.

During Clean-Up – What Should You Expect?

Both water and debris will need to be cleared from a flooded area. Due to muddy floodwaters, insects and certain animals may be attracted to the property. While cleaning the area, don't be surprised if you have to deal with insects, snakes, rats, and more.

If a floor feels like it's sinking in or drooping, be extremely careful walking in the area. If you're not sure where it's safe to step, you can get hurt. Avoid going into a structure that looks like it's falling apart.

Tips and Precautions

PPE (personal protective equipment) and clothing should always be worn when cleaning up or dealing with water contamination, water damage, etc.

To remove water and mud from your property, you cannot use a regular vacuum cleaner. Dehumidifiers, heavy-duty fans, and commercial wet vacs should be used.

To avoid infection, after drying, areas must be thoroughly cleaned and/or sanitized. For services like ceilings and walls, detergent and warm water may suffice. However, hot water and soap are recommended for dirty items like dishes, cooking utensils, silverware, and more.

The Best Advice For Handling Water Damage

If your home or business has experienced water damage, you may not want to attempt repair and/or restoration on your own. It can be extremely difficult to deal with and even unsafe. But, if you contact the water damage experts at SERVPRO, you can begin the process of post water damage recovery in expedited fashion.

Set your mind at ease by letting certified and experienced professionals take care of the problem. Do you have water damage? Don't wait another moment. Contact us today.

Our Restoration Specialists Use Hygrometer

10/8/2021 (Permalink)

Sometimes called thermal hygrometers, hygrometers are one in a long list of restoration tools. On a water damage project, they monitor any air that may have an influence on humidity and/or the temperature. Within an air sample, this item can measure the amount of humidity (water vapor). Hygrometers, when used properly, can verify whether additional equipment might be necessary to control humidity or temperature, and additionally that the drying equipment is operating appropriately.

Strategic Decisions Using Hygrometers

Drying conditions can be verified through the use of hygrometers as the drying progresses. It can help answer the question, "Are the conditions needed to allow wood, carpet, and walls to dry being met?" You will know, through an analysis using a hygrometer, that things are going according to plan.

On a water damage restoration job – on a daily basis – monitoring is needed on five key areas. They are as follows:

  • Outdoor air
  • HVAC system
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Unaffected areas
  • Affected areas

Let's look at each of these individually.

Outdoor Air

To assist drying, outside air can be used if it is actually more conducive to drying than the inside air in the area affected. For a short period of time, it would be perfectly acceptable to open a window or a door. Wet air will travel toward the drier air because it gravitates to dry, if it can.

HVAC System

Rather than hindering a process, a running HVAC system should aid in it. Monitoring will help make sure this is happening. Monitoring the output of the HVAC – which acts like a big dehumidifier – is crucial.

Being assured that a dehumidifier is continuously removing humidity is essential. Grain depression can be determined by making a comparison between the air in the affected area and the GPP coming from the humidifier. Drying will be faster the greater the depression. Between the two, grain depression will narrow as drying progresses.

Note: GPP stands for grains per pound. It measures the weight of water vapor in the air.

Unaffected Areas

There should be relatively stable humidity in areas that are unaffected. Drying times will be slowed considerably if unaffected area humidity decreases along with the humidity in the affected area.

Affected Areas

With each reading, humidity should decrease. Readings under 40% Rh should be present (for relative humidity) after the first 24 hours. By denying needed moisture, you can help stop mold growth with a low Rh.

Understanding Home Inspection For Storm Damage

10/8/2021 (Permalink)

In the aftermath of a storm, it is normal to expect some damage to have been wrought on your home. You may wish to carry out a quick home inspection before calling in the professionals. Always remember to do this safely, especially if you need to inspect your roof. In this article, we share with you more about the signs to watch out for when conducting a home inspection for storm damage.

Spotting Signs of Damage on Your Roof

As the part of your house that is most exposed to the elements, your roof may have sustained the bulk of damage. Below are some warning signs to watch out for:

  • Shingle granules in the surrounding areas, such as your yard and possibly your neighbors’ yards
  • Water damage in your attic, including leaks
  • Dents in your shingles
  • Pieces of roof that may have washed down your gutters

Keep in mind that storm damage to your roof can be directional, which means that just one side of your roof is affected, with the other three sides looking completely fine. When inspecting damage on your roof, the safest way to do so is from ground level. Never attempt to crawl out onto the roof by yourself – always leave that up to a professional.

Spotting Signs of Damage on Your Windows and Doors

Another vulnerable part of your home is your windows and doors. When strong winds cause flying debris to hurl against the exterior of your house, windows and doors can bear the brunt of the damage. Look out for any cracks, dents and broken panes, and remember to give your shutters, awnings and window caps a one-over too.

Spotting Signs of Damage on The Exterior of Your Property

Even though the exterior of your house is made to be durable, it can also sustain damage during a storm. You will want to watch out for any damage caused to shingles, siding as well as cement and brick boards. Any dents, cracking or chipping are a sign that the exterior of your property has sustained some form of damage. You may also want to check any exterior features such as pipes and A/C parts.

What Are The Signs Of Storm Damage?

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

After a storm has occurred in your area, you may be concerned whether your property has sustained any damage. One area that is prone to storm damage is your roof. Being completely open to the elements, it is no small wonder that roofs can sustain damage after a storm, which homeowners have to watch out for. In this article, we share with you more about the signs of storm damage.

Spotting the First Signs of Damage

If you are worried that your home has sustained storm damage, look out for the following signs both inside and outside your house:

  • Ceilings with a “wet” appearance
  • Damaged or missing shingles on your roof
  • Mold growth on your walls or ceiling, which can be identified by a damp smell
  • Peeling interior pain
  • Any large branches that have fallen on the roof
  • Leaks around the house

These are all signs that your property has sustained storm damage. To prevent the problem from worsening and posing a threat to your family’s health and safety, always consult a professional storm damage restoration technician as timely as possible.

Inspecting Your Roof

Besides the signs you should look out for above, you will also need to pay close attention to your roof. As the part of your house most exposed to the elements, it’s possible that your roof may have sustained a level of damage. Below are some signs to watch out for:

  • Shingle granules in your yard or on the surrounding grounds
  • Water damage in your attic
  • Damaged shingles, such as those with dents and chips
  • Damaged sealant or flashing

If you spot any of the warning signs on your roof from the ground up, always keep in mind that you should not attempt to investigate this on your roof by yourself. It can be dangerous for individuals who have not undergone professional training to climb onto a damaged roof, as unstable shingles and other forms of damage can result in possible trips and falls. When that is the case, getting a professional in is the best course of action to mitigate any additional damage to your roof as well as keep yourself safe.

Let SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan/Financial District Assist You with Storm Damage Restoration

How Does Hail Damage Affect Your Roof?

9/22/2021 (Permalink)

Hailstorms most commonly occur in the southern and central plains of the United States. They are caused when rain droplets that are transported upward by thunderstorm updrafts into extremely low temperature parts of the atmosphere and freeze. They fall when the updrafts can no longer carry the weight of the hailstones.

Your roof is one of the most integral parts of your residence as it helps to shield everything within your home from the element. As hailstorms are an uncontrollable aspect of our local weather and climate, damage to our roof over time can cause severe issues in the long-term. Here are the common signs of hail damage on the roof and why you shouldn’t ignore them.

Bruising on the Roof

Bruising is a very common result of hailstorms. They are usually identified by small dents along the roof shingles. If the dents give way when some force is applied, it is an indicator that your roof might be decaying, whereas if the bruising is not serious, no immediate actions will need to be taken.

If possible, you should go up to the roof and feel along the surface to check if there are any bruised or decayed parts on it. If the bruising is severe and there are signs of decay, it is important for you to contact a roofing professional to do a comprehensive inspection to prolong the lifespan of your roof.

Missing Spots on the Roof

Missing spots or shingles on your roof can be caused by many factors such as exposure to the elements like the sun and inclement weather like hailstorms and thunderstorms that can cause the roof to be fragile. Cracking, blistering, and flaking are also other types of common wear and tear caused by storm damage. These are usually signifiers that your roof might need maintenance.

Leaving these missing spots unrepaired in the long-term can threaten the structural integrity of your roof and with more exposure to the elements, can cause even more damage like water leaks within your home. At the end of the day, you might be looking at expensive bill for a roof repair or replacement.

Whenever it’s possible and safe for you to do so, you should do a physical check and identify any damage or cracks in your roof shingles. It is important to note that the appearance of the damage may vary depending on the material and composition of your roof shingles.

Weak Spots on The Roof

After a hailstorm, it is important for you climb up and inspect your roof physically. One type of roof damage you should check out for are soft spots, they usually feel like the surface of a ripe apple’s skin. If left unaddressed, these may cause serious problems like water leaks in the future. Immediate actions and repairs should be taken to rectify the issue immediately.

Defective and Damaged Roof Vents

Most roof vents are created using lightweight metal. As a result, dents and cracks can be formed by the impact of the hail falling on them. In the worst case, where there are actual breakthroughs on the entire structure of the roof vents, serious issues such as water damage may occur and will cause extensive damage. Contact your local roofing professional immediately if you discover these defects during your roof inspection, time is of the essence.

Roofing Granules Found in Roof Gutters

When checking your roof for any hail damage, you should also check its gutters for any shingle granules that might have come loose due to the hailstorms. Hailstorms can chip away at the granules in the shingles and may be carried away into the gutters once the hail melts.

These granules are extremely small and are usually indicators that your roof is not providing your home with the same structural integrity and protection as before. If this is the case, it is vital that you contact a storm damage specialist to repair and fix any roof damage.

The aftermath of a hailstorm can be messy and a true hassle to deal with. If you are looking for a quality storm damage cleanup and restoration service provider, SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan/Financial District is prepared to help you through your turbulent times, please feel contact us to find out more.

Items That Can Be Contaminated By Fire Damage

8/27/2021 (Permalink)

Household fires can result in extensive damage to your home where you might have to end up engaging fire damage restoration services. Despite the ability to restore your home to almost as good as new with professional fire damage restoration services, other important items in your home such as documents and personal items would be devastated by the fire. Although suffering from household fire may not mean that every single thing in your property is destroyed, there may be some things inside that fortunately have been salvaged. However, some things that remains seemingly unscathed after a fire should still be thrown out due to contamination from fire damage. It is important for you to sort through all your belongings and throw out some things that might have been contaminated by fire damage.

Whether it is perishable items or non-perishable food, all food items must be disposed of after a fire. Although some food items may appear to be in a good condition, it is impossible to tell what is present or growing in the bottles or cans after they have been exposed to high heat. Food could still be dangerous despite looking, smelling and tasting normal. Conversely, heat could also have activated bacteria and you may end up with food that taste bad and is dangerous when consumed. Food packed in foil, plastic or cardboard would absorb smoke and chemicals. The toxic fumes from the fire could also have contaminated foods in cans and jars even though they are sealed.

Many people are usually tempted to keep medication that have survived after a fire because they can be costly even if they are prescribed or bought from the counter. Like food, medications also can absorb smoke and contaminants from the fire which makes them potentially dangerous. The heat from the fire might also impact the effectiveness of the medications. Other than medications, cosmetics should be disposed of as they also easily absorb smoke and chemicals.

Burnt Textiles

Although a good restoration company is usually able to save textiles following a household fire, these textiles would usually have absorbed too much smoke to be sage to use. It is possible to remove the smell of smoke from clothing, bedding, furniture and rugs, but if such textiles have actually been burnt, they need to be discarded.

Paper Goods

Paper has a high ability to absorb smoke and chemicals not just from the fire but from fire extinguishers. If paper goods including paper plates and cups are used, the users might suffer from poisoning.

What You can do to Recover from a Fire

Every property owner should be well-prepared to not just prevent household fires from occurring but also to know what to do in the event this happens. Our team of experts and professionals here at SERVPRO in lower Manhattan are licensed and well-trained to assist you in fire damage restoration services. Don’t suffer alone, let us help you to bring back your home even after suffering a household fire. Our one-stop solution also includes other services such as cleaning and garden maintenance for the total maintenance of your property. Top Tips To Protect Your Business From Storm Damage

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

From snowstorms and freezing temperatures to heavy rainfall and high winds, weather can be completely unpredictable. No matter how many high-tech machines and trained individuals try, determining what the weather will do at any given moment is dicey at best.

For that very reason, preparing for storm damage is crucial – especially in areas where storms are prevalent and severe. Whether your business is a butcher shop, a gym, a salon, an office building, or what have you, it's best to be prepared just in case the big one hits. For the well-being and safety of your customers and staff, you must protect your business premises whenever and wherever possible. But how do you do that?

During difficult weather conditions, your customers and staff can better be protected if you take into consideration the following advice.

Storm Insurance

The direct effects of a storm on your physical building may not be covered by certain insurance policies. If, while they are on your premises, something happens to staff members or customers as a result of bad weather, they are likely covered, however.

Check with your insurance provider to see what kind of plan you need in place – if any is available – to protect you, your building, and your business against the devastation brought on by a possible storm.

Storm Preparation

Though it's not always possible, the best course of action in preparing for a storm is knowing when one is coming. In many cases, areas prone to severe weather have set up warning systems in the pursuit of storm preparation and safety. If need be, always have a source of weather updates on at your business when severe weather threatens (a weather app, the weather channel on a TV screen, etc.).

You should have a business continuity plan in place to appropriately prepare for a storm. You could end up being without phone service and/or Internet for days. What is “business continuity”? It means that your business will be able to quickly resume business functions or maintain them in the event of a storm or other major disruption. It's a backup plan. Make sure things like the following are covered by your business continuity plan:

  • Arrangements for a power backup.
  • Details involving emergency contacts.
  • A clear definition of who is responsible for anything and everything.
  • What to do with stock, equipment, etc.
  • Business processes.

One of the biggest things to remember is that safety comes first. Machines, desks, and even some paperwork can be replaced (especially if it's stored digitally). People cannot be replaced. Keep your customers, yourself, and your staff safe at all costs.

To help minimize water damage, here are some things you can do if your area is prone to flooding:

  • Keep a sandbag supply handy.
  • Replace old, broken/deteriorated bricks.
  • Replace faulty wooden doors and window frames.
  • Move things that should never get wet to the second floor or up on a shelf.
  • In your bathroom and kitchen, use water resistant materials.
  • To at least 1.5 m above the floor, raise electrical devices, wiring, fuse boxes, sockets, etc.

If there's already a flood warning:

  • Should the worst happen, make sure you have copies of important documents stored digitally.
  • Move stock, equipment, and valuable items to the second floor if not already done. This includes insurance documents, title deeds, and other important paperwork.
  • In areas where water can enter the property, put down your sandbags.
  • Turn off your water supply, electricity, and gas.

What Are The Most Common Home Plumbing Problems?

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

Here's one guarantee in life: plumbing problems. That's just what you wanted to hear, isn't it? As assured as the need to make timely mortgage payments as a homeowner, the plumbing problems that go along with owning a home are unavoidable. One way or another, you're going to have to deal with a plumbing issue, whether it's a water heater problem, clogged drain, leaking pipe, or what have you.

To give you a better idea of what to look forward to, and maybe a way to avoid water damage, we're going to examine plumbing problems that frequently happen in the home.

Hot Water Problems

Without water heaters, it would be more difficult to wash dishes, some types of laundry, and take a comfortable shower or bath. If you aren't getting any hot water, check the pilot or the electrical hookup. If all seems in order, start checking for other problems like leaks, cracks, etc. Your tank might stop working altogether, or at least experience lower efficiency, if capacity is reduced due to sediment building up on the bottom of the tank.

Want to avoid water heater problems? Check these out:

  • Call a professional plumber immediately if you notice water pooling under the hot water tank, cracks, or leaks.
  • To continuously protect your tank walls from corrosion, replace the sacrificial anode rod midway through the unit's life.
  • To remove corrosion and built-up sediment, drain and flush out the water heater every year.

Here, we are referring to leaks involving water. If you don't live in an ultra-cold climate, you at least won't have to deal with frozen pipes. Those can be a real pain! When water in pipes freezes, it also expands. This expansion can lead to burst pipes. That usually means water everywhere!

Those aren’t the only leaks, of course. A variety of problems can be caused by material buildup inside of plumbing. Leaks can occur and, at worst, plumbing bursts from the strain.

You could end up with mold and mildew, destroyed drywall, a damaged structure, and a ruined floor if you experience a leaky roof, broken pipes, or some other type of flood or massive leak.

Here's how to avoid big leaks:

  • Take immediate action at the first sign of a leak.
  • When any signs of deterioration show up in your pipes, replace your home plumbing system.
  • To lessen the threat on appliances and plumbing, and eliminate hard water scaling, install a water softener.

Clogged Drains

Whether it's your bathroom/kitchen sink, toilet, shower drain, or some other drain, this plumbing problem is undoubtedly the most common. In the kitchen, food or grease might be clogging your drain. In the bathroom, it could be hair and soap combined. There is no telling what you might find down the toilet drain!

If you're lucky, you may be able to use a metal hanger or plunger to clear the block. Some are tougher, however, and require a snake or other professional tool/method by a plumber.

Want to avoid a clogged drain? Consider the following:

  • Within 10 feet of any buried drain line, remove bushes, trees, and other plants to avoid roots interfering with the drainage system.
  • In the bathroom and kitchen, practice drain-safe disposal. Don't put a lot of flour, rice, pasta, or eggshells down your kitchen drain. Don't pour grease down your drain. Don't flush "flushable" wipes or other hygiene products and use a strainer to prevent hair from going down the bathroom drains.
  • Get a sewer line camera inspection done by a plumber if you notice your drains have started to drain slowly. Any sewer line problems, cracks, or clog issues can be found in this manner.

Common Causes Of Household Fires

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

Nobody would ever be able to guess if they will ever be a victim of a household fire because such accidents are unpredictable and unfortunately, usually caused by accidental negligence. Such accidental fires can result in extensive damage to your home where you might have to end up engaging fire damage restoration services. Despite the ability to restore your home to almost as good as new with professional fire damage restoration services, other important items in your home such as documents and personal items would be gone. The best way, as the saying goes, is always that prevention is better than cure. All home owners must know the most common causes of household fires so that they will know what to look out for and exercise caution in the first place.

A person holding a lit cigarette might have been distracted or have fallen asleep and this led to a fire. Fires caused by smoking are extremely dangerous as the fire gets out of control in a very short amount of time without being noticed and starts spreading right where the person is sleeping. A fire could start even by just one stray ash. It is very important to ensure that you should never light up a cigarette in the event where you are feeling very tired and not to smoke in bed or near furniture such as blankets or carpets that are easily flammable.

Cooking is one of the most common causes of house fires. When oil and grease become overheated by accident, a fire that burns hot and fast could be caused. It is important for the person cooking to remain in the kitchen at all times while cooking and never leave the lighted stove unattended.

Apart from kitchen cooking appliances such as air fryers and toasters, any other appliances found around the house can get hot and when they do, they are huge fire hazards. One such appliance is the space heater that is notorious for causing a fire. Since there are materials around the house that can catch fire easily such as fabrics or wooden furniture. Unknown to many, faulty wiring found in electrical appliances could also start a fire. To prevent this, always ensure that you are at home when using appliances especially your space heater.

Electrical Fires

Whether it is a short or fault in the wiring, it can always lead to a fire in your walls. Located at hidden areas and out of sight, these fires could quickly become dangerous. Unless you are certified and experienced in doing electrical work, always hire a professional and have your wiring checked consistently.

How Does A Dirty Storefront Affect Your Retail Business?

8/25/2021 (Permalink)

Here’s a question we’d like to pose to business owners with a brick-and-mortar shop: "Do you think customers care, or even notice, if you have a dirty storefront?"

If you are a business owner/operator, undoubtedly, you work to operate a business that is profitable. In doing so, you likely pay a great deal of attention to offering competitive costs, providing excellent service, and more. But what about your business's appearance? We're not talking about business cards and logo here, but rather, your store location’s physical appearance. When it comes to the decision a customer makes as to whether or not to walk through the door of your store, how much of an impact do you suppose the appearance of your storefront has?

It may matter more than you ever imagined!

Attracting New Customers with a Clean Storefront

Rather than having a potential customer walk right by your business when they see your storefront, you want them to be encouraged to enter. Once inside, you can thrill them with matchless products, a professional presentation, and more. However, you'll never get them through the door and land a sale with a dirty storefront.

Should your potential customers judge a book by its cover? Of course not. But we all do it.

Before people decide to stop into a shop, how many of them do you think make a snap judgment based on exterior appearance alone? The answer: 95%! A generally unappealing storefront, for whatever reason, is to blame for approximately two thirds of consumers not entering a business. A dirty storefront, specifically, has caused more than half of consumers not to bother walking through the door. Do you want that to be your store? Of course not.

For that reason, and many more, consider hiring a professional retail cleaning service to thoroughly clean your storefront. As a business owner, you have enough to worry about, after all. Let the experts handle it.

Keeping Existing Customers with a Clean Storefront

You will be judged on more than just your appearance once a customer has visited you for the first time. How many customers do you think never returned to a business location because their expectations simply were not met? The answer: 80%. Customer retention is crucial.

Quality service, where customer retention is concerned, is the most important factor. Due to poor customer service, the number of people who never again visit a business is 68%. If, the first time a customer visits you, they can't find what they’re looking for, 53% of them won’t come back. The number of customers who will never darken your door again if your store isn't clean equals approximately 32%.

A dirty storefront could be eliminating the possibility of 1/3 of first-time visitors returning!

People won't be encouraged to look elsewhere if you satisfy them with cleanliness, good organization, and excellent service.

Can Ceiling Water Damage Be Repaired?

8/25/2021 (Permalink)

One of the worst aspects of water, where damage and stains are concerned, is that it can go pretty much anywhere. It seems to get to and through anything and everything. A plumbing leak or inclement weather leak can affect the quality of your home as well as your family’s comfort and health.

Ceiling water damage can end up in repair bills of staggering amounts. Check to see if there is any ceiling discoloration to head off ceiling water damage before it becomes a major problem. If your ceiling has started to sag a bit, a lot of damage has already been done! If you see a saggy ceiling, you've got trouble! First and foremost, you'll have to repair the cause of the water making your ceiling sag. Once that's done, your best bet is to bring in a professional cleanup/restoration service. Shortly, we’ll inform you as to the best company to contact.

Water Damage Causes

Plumbing issues are the number one cause of ceiling water damage. If your ceiling experiences discoloration, look closely at where it first appears. Is the leak coming from the bathroom? Kitchen? Drains, when they leak, frequently cause water stains underneath (which would be the ceiling of the room below). With old plumbing systems under toilets, sinks, showers, etc., the more water that flows through them, they further they break down (if corrosion is the problem).

Another common cause of ceiling water stains is the possibility that your roof may be compromised and/or weak. During heavy rain falls and other severe weather conditions, you may have active water dripping through onto your ceiling. This might be caused by roof damage or a clog somewhere in the roofing system.

Assessing Ceiling Leaks And Damage

Before working on the leak, move any valuables that may be damaged by water well out of the way. You have to go above the stain to find out where the water is coming from. It may not be falling directly down. Rather, it may be flowing to a low spot which just ends up being where the stain on your ceiling is located. The source of water leaks can be very tricky to locate.

Once the leak is fixed, you'll have to inspect the areas that have been affected by the water. A lot of water can be held in drywall ceilings. Plaster, however, not so much. You may choose to remove any collected water above a drywall ceiling by poking a hole in it. Make sure you have a container underneath to catch the water. Be prepared for floor damage if you don't protect your floor with something to catch the water.

Repairing Stained Ceilings

Some light staining is not that big of a deal. A can of Kilz and some paint and you're on your way. But when the damage is more serious, rather than dealing with all of the mildew, mold, flaking or broken drywall, damaged plaster, rebuilding, repainting, etc., call in the professionals. Particularly if mold and mildew has formed – and it probably has – you want to bring in technicians who are going to make sure your family and home is safe and healthy. That's the best way to deal with mold and mildew. Leave it to the people who have all of the equipment and other products specially made for dealing with situations such as this.

Has Your Roof Been Destroyed During A Storm?

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

A destroyed roof, both during and after a storm, can wreak havoc on a residence or business. Even the slightest roof leak can lead to a plethora of problems. If it gets bad enough, you may even experience standing water in your building. While floodwaters carry risks all their own, water damage can run the gamut from mild to severe. Threats to individuals as well as the structures can result from extended water leakages and/or damage.

The most important thing to remember is that, as soon as you notice water damage, locate the source and remedy the problem. Once the water trouble source has been taken care of, it's time for repairs and refurbishment. Fortunately, at SERVPRO, we are experts at water restoration resulting from floods, leaks, storms, fires, and more.

For now, however, let's take a look at damaged roofs and what should be done when you encounter them.

Damage Comes in Many Forms

When you think of roof damage during a storm, rain may be your first thought for the cause. Truth be told, however, there can be lots of causes for roof damage and a number of situations that result. Here are the types of damage that you may experience:

  • Wind damage
  • Rain damage
  • Hail damage

What to Look For

Now that the storm has passed, what should you look for to determine what kind of damage you have, if any? Frequently, missing roof shingles, curled shingles, or water spots on the ceiling are obvious signs of roof damage. You might also notice issues around your home's exterior like standing water, water walls, damaged roof flashing, and more. You may even experience winter ice damming.

Here's what to watch for:

  • Always check the condition of your shingles after a storm
  • Check for peeling and/or loose sealant
  • Watch for missing flashing around chimneys, vents, skylights, and roof edges
  • On your ceiling or in your attic, check for water damage

Remember that signs of roof damage aren't always obvious. You may need to go in search of it.

If You Experience Roof Damage

Getting your roof repaired following damage is crucial to both the integrity of the structure itself and to any people within the building. This applies to both businesses and residences. Take pictures of the damage if you can. Contact your insurance company immediately. If necessary, cover the damaged area with a tarp or hire a service to do so. Once the insurance company has surveyed the problem, it will be time to hire a roof repair service. Following repair, it's time to restore any water damaged areas.

The Importance of Acting Quickly after Roof Damage

Though there can be many causes of home or business flooding, a damaged roof (during and after a storm) can wreak havoc on the following:

  • Individuals who depend on the building for business
  • Visitors to a business or home
  • Those who live in the building as a residence
  • The integrity of the structure itself, and more

Water damage and flooding can be caused by heavy rains, faulty plumbing, broken appliances, etc. The faster you act when you notice water damage, the sooner you can remedy the problem and restore your business or residence to its original beauty and functionality.

We, at SERVPRO, understand when it comes to water damage, the problem must be remedied, and the property restored in an expedited manner. Families and businesses depend on the buildings we service. What Can Flood Water Do To Your Home After A Storm?

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

Following a storm, though many threats can occur as a result, one of the most likely is the danger of flood water. In fact, every year, various regions across the US are devastated by hurricanes, tornadoes, severe storms, and more. Once the storm has passed, seemingly, so has any threat to your well-being, property, etc. That's not necessarily the case, however. Some of the biggest dangers that can result – in addition to road closures, lack of supplies, and more – are the risks presented by standing floodwater.

If your business or residence has experienced a flood, for whatever reason, your fast action is crucial to the well-being of your family, your staff, your business, your home, etc. Here at SERVPRO, we understand that. That's why we stand ready – with 24-hour emergency services – to be of assistance.

Now, let's take a look at some of the threats we are referring to where floodwater is concerned.

Hazards of the Physical Nature

Though physical hazards do exist after a flood, other threats can be present. We’ll refer to those in a moment. First of all, however, let's talk about any physical hazards that may arise as a result of floodwater.

Beneath the surface of murky water, threatening animals and/or dangerous insects can be concealed. Sometimes, this depends on the storm’s location but, in southern and tropical regions such as Florida and Louisiana, alligators have found their way to areas they wouldn't ordinarily inhabit. As a result of the storm, they are perfectly happy to make use of a new home!

That's only one scenario, however. Even after a storm is done, flood water can contain dangers. Impossible to see until you actually encounter it, can be sharp metal or broken glass, which can cause significant injury.

Downed power lines are always a problem after a severe storm. This kind of damage, particularly if flooding has occurred, can be widespread and exceedingly dangerous. When in standing water, the risk of electrocution is high.

In addition to all of the above, it never fails that someone tries to cross a flooded area on foot or in a car. Regardless, drowning can be the result.

The CDC Weighs In On Flood Water

While we at SERVPRO cannot legally advise you on health effects, the CDC themselves have weighed in on the topic of standing flood water presenting health effects. In the event of a storm disaster, according to the CDC, the threat of numerous diseases becomes more likely (think West Nile and Norovirus). Why is this? The CDC tells us that infected water can spread diseases and bacteria to everything it touches. This includes the toys your children play with and articles of clothing.

Even if a storm is not particularly severe, depending on your location, flooding can happen. With insufficient drainage, an area can be flooded with even a medium amount of rain.

So, you can see the importance of proper cleanup and sanitation following a flood.

The Importance of Fast Action after a Flood

There can be many different sources of water damage. In addition to heavy rains, things like broken appliances, faulty plumbing, and more can cause a flood in your home or business. What's truly important is that, as quickly as possible, you react. At SERVPRO, we know time is of the essence particularly when referring to water damage from a flood.

To create a plan for water restoration after a flood, count on our team of professionals. If you have experienced flood damage, don't hesitate another moment. Fast action is crucial! Contact us today.

Understanding Commercial Carpet Cleaning After Fire Damage

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

Every year, there are close to 1.5 million fires that occur in the United States alone. Judging from the sheer number of cases, fire damage is a common problem that many businesses have to deal with. Fire is an important part of lives but it can be extremely detrimental to our lives when we lose control of it. Fire damage has resulted in many people losing their businesses and their assets ruined permanently. As such, if you have a wall-to-wall carpet that has been affected by fire damage, this article will explain about the carpet cleaning process and what can be done to mitigate the damage that has been done.

Level of Difficulty

Your business or corporate property, you might not even know where to start when it comes to cleaning after fire damage has been sustained. However, when addressing the issue of difficulty when cleaning commercial carpets, it is dependent on the extent of damage that has been done and the type of damage. If your carpet is merely affected by the smoke, then the chances are that it will be much easier to clean. On the other hand, if your carpet or upholstery has been damaged by a combination of water, dirt and heat, then the process of cleaning will definitely be more complicated and difficult.

Cleaning Process

If you make the wise choice to hire a professional to clean the carpet after fire damage, then it is best that you are aware of the carpet cleaning process. The process usually involves the sanitizing of the carpet and mitigating any damage that has been caused by debris and smoke as a result of the fire. Before anything can be done, the carpet will be sanitized using the proper cleaning agents, in order to prevent the growth of fungi and bacteria which might cause adverse health effects. The sanitation will also help to remove the remaining dirt that are stuck in the fibers of your carpet. After ridding your carpet of these unwanted items, it is then necessary to apply anti-odor chemicals to it. This will help to eradicate the odor of smoke, which can be extremely overwhelming if it is not dealt with properly.

Carpets that Cannot be Restored

If you see that your carpet has already sustained substantial damage from things like heat or water, then there is a high chance that you might have to get it replaced. When carpets are exposed to extremely high temperatures, the fibers can be damaged permanently. If you are dealing with upholstery, the internal wood or metal components might also be structurally compromised.

Conversely, if your carpet has been exposed to too much water, it might remove the adhesives that bind it to the flooring. In cases where the carpet gets too wet, its padding can become saturated. Unfortunately this damage is irreversible and the only way to fix the problem is to replace it with a new one.

Commercial Property Owners Should Take Note Of Humidity Levels

6/27/2021 (Permalink)

Mold damage is something every commercial property owner would worry about because of how susceptible any space can be to mold growth and how much it would cost them when it comes to business. Depending on the area that you are located in, some parts of your country may have more humidity while others have a dryer climate. The humidity refers to the amount of moisture in the air and a high level of humidity will result in a higher possibility of mold growth in your space. The ability to control the amount of moisture that gets indoors is the key to controlling humidity levels which leads to the risk of your commercial property getting mold.

When the environment is damp and there is a presence of organic material such as wood, paneling, drywall paper backing and other material that used to be alive, this is when mold will thrive. Mold growth increases when such areas have a relative humidity of 60% and above, which is easy to reach when commercial property owners are not careful to check and maintain the area on a regular basis. When mold starts to consume these organic materials, mold spores are shot into the air resulting in a damp or musty smell. Apart from causing bad air quality which can cause allergies and respiratory problems for tenants, this is also very damaging for building materials. There is hence a need for to pay close attention of humidity levels in your commercial property to protect building materials especially evaporator coils, and to improve indoor air quality.

What Causes Humidity Issues?

One of the common causes for high humidity issues is from the ventilation and make-up air since they carry the biggest humidification load. The second most common problem for severe moisture issues is when outdoor air that is humid is pulled through the exterior wall through accidental suction. This suction is typically formed from exhaust ducts or unsealed return air. If these two factors are not why your property is experiencing high humidity level, you could also check for water seepage where there is dampness in the walls and foundation of your building. There is a possibility of water seeping into your building through joints in the concrete foundation. These will lead to fungal growth and when the moisture seeps in and comes into contact with organic building materials, mold will grow.

What You can do to Get Rid of Humidity

Our team of experts and professionals here at SERVPRO in lower Manhattan are licensed and well-trained to assist you in checking your commercial property for humidity levels as well as carry out dehumidification services. We take pride in helping you enjoy a peace of mind with our dehumidification solutions and strive for you to enjoy running your business worry-free of mold and humidity issues in your commercial property. Active Home Fire Prevention Steps To Take

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

Majority of home fire cases is unexpected and they are often caused by the most common task that we perform daily at home which we perceive to be safe. Things like accidentally turning on a stove, leaving the kettle on for too long, forgetting to blow out a candle, and many other daily activities may end up in a scary nightmare. Below are some simple yet effective home fire prevention tips that we can all follow to prevent common household fires.

Cooking Fires

Cooking fires make up at least 23 % of home fires and 9 % of fatalities. They can start with something so simple like a hand towel that is placed too close to a stove to an entirely dangerous house fire in just a matter of seconds. To prevent cooking fires, avoid ever leaving anything combustible near the stove burner. Keep them at least 3 feet away from the cooktop and this includes wall decorations and curtains.

Heating Equipment

Space heaters and wood stove tops are the most common heating equipment that causes house fires. They account for 15 % of house fires and 13 % of fatalities. Most heating equipment fires take place when space heaters or wood stove tops are placed near combustibles with nobody around attending to the area. Such fires can be prevented by placing space heaters or wood stove tops at least 3 feet away from bedding, drapes, and other flammable items. You also need to plug them directly into power sockets instead of using extension cords and switch them off completely when you head to bed or leave the house.

Electrical Equipment

Overloaded extension cords or bad electrical connections are dangerous as they can melt the wiring system which starts house fires. This type of fire accounts for 9 % of home fires and 10 % of fatalities. To prevent this type of fire, replace your extension cords which seem to be fraying. Those extension cords that are undersized to support the number of electronics you have also need to be changed to larger-gauge cords. Extension cords are also not supposed to be run below rugs as accidents are just waiting to happen. Other causes of accidents may involve miscellaneous incidents that are caused by negligent homeowners.

Fire Damage Restoration

Prevention is not that difficult to accomplish if we follow the correct recommended steps. However, occasionally things just happen unexpectedly which are simply beyond our control. If you have suffered from an unfortunate home fire, do not worry about fixing everything on your own. Always engage the services of professional fire damage restoration experts who can assess the extent of your home damage and recommend the proper techniques that need to be taken. It can be hard to come back from a home fire both physically and mentally which is why it is crucial to make use of professional restoration services. Focus on recuperating mentally while the experts take charge of getting your home back to its original physical condition with careful expertise and equipment.

Understanding The Importance Of Dry Out In Water Damage Restoration Processes

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage can be caused by plenty of factors and not just solely by flooding alone. Leaks, higher humidity, and broken pipes are some of the other reasons that may cause water damage to happen. Water damage can lead to much more critical problems inside your home which are potentially harmful to humans and property as wet areas are the perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria. This is the exact reason why dry out in water damage restoration is the most important step to prevent serious problems.

Prone to Flooding

Hiring water damage professionals means having someone with expertise come assess the situation for you which they can address and fix immediately so the problem can be resolved without any delays.

What Is The Recommended Duration For Running Dehumidifiers After Water Leaks?

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

As per records from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, there is a waste of approximately 1 trillion gallons of water each year that is caused by household water leaks. In addition, 37 % of homeowners admit having suffered financial losses due to water damage in their residences. Water leaks are truly more than just that annoying dripping water sound. They could mean going days getting involved in major clean-ups to ensure carpets, furniture, walls, and floors get thoroughly dried out. Running dehumidifiers after water leaks is also helpful during this process to support your efforts.

Do Dehumidifiers Help to Dry Out Water Damage?

Dehumidifiers work the same way like vacuum cleaners which is to take the moisture out from the air. Dehumidifiers basically involve two different processes which are absorption and adsorption. Absorption is the process of taking out moisture from a particular material that is drenched in water. Adsorption is when you lift off moisture from a surface. Dehumidifiers do not just help to dry out water leaks but they are also useful in reducing allergy symptoms. Dehumidifiers draw moist air from the room where flooding or a water leak has taken place. There is a rotating wheel inside the duct which is highly absorbent which is used to remove humidity in the air. Drier air is then being circulated back into the space which will help to dry out the dampness found inside the room.

How Long Should Dehumidifiers Be Run?

The duration that a dehumidifier needs to be run after flooding or water leak really depends on a number of factors. Water damage professionals will first assess the flooded area to determine the degree of the damage. Other factors that need to be considered are as follows:

  • Size of Flooded Area – If the area is small, then the dehumidifier needs to be run for a much shorter period of time. However, if the entire house is affected, it is recommended to run several dehumidifiers at once for a number of days or up to an entire week. An enclosed area will also help dehumidifiers to function more efficiently.
  • Humidity Levels – Another factor that affects the duration is the level of humidity in the area. During summer, you will typically need to run a dehumidifier much longer due to higher humidity levels. During the winter, the duration can be reduced as humidity levels are also lower.
  • Severity of Damages – A water leak that happens in linoleum floor or concrete as well as in walls causes much lesser damage as these materials are not as absorbent. However, if the water leak seeps into your drywall, carpets, wooden furniture, and other wooden surfaces, then a dehumidifier needs to be run for a much longer period of time to achieve optimum results.

Regardless of your water damage situation, restoration experts at SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan are able to provide a solution after a proper assessment. Get in touch with our team as soon as you uncover a water leak or flooding to keep the situation at bay.

Understanding Different Fire Residues And Smoke

5/7/2021 (Permalink)

There are basically three different types of smoke and fire residues that may get left behind after a fire broke out in your home or at your place of business. Below is a more comprehensive depiction of each of these residues and the corresponding techniques that you can take to clean them up thoroughly.

Synthetic Residues

These synthetic residues form when materials that are oil based get burned. These include fabrics and plastics which can appear in the forms of furniture, window frames, electronics, and carpets. When synthetic materials burn, a thick black smoke is produced. This will then leave behind a smeary residue which can cause a huge mess if not cleaned up through the right techniques. In such a situation, do not touch any of the residue so as to prevent smearing. Vacuuming is the best method to clean the synthetic residues which is to be followed by dry-chem sponge cleaning.

Protein Residues

When meats and beans burn, they cause a fire that leaves a yellowish-brown residue behind. The texture is slightly greasy and the residue may stick onto any surface which makes it a chore to clean up. It is crucial that you purchase the right fire cleaning chemical from a hardware store if you need to work on protein residues after a fire. Be sure to get hold of the correct chemicals as using an unsuitable product may cause the residue to spread and stick, causing an even bigger mess.

Natural Residue

Fires that are caused by burning natural products like paper and wood can produce a residue that looks dry and powdery. This residue is usually greyish-black in color and is much easier to clean up as compared to synthetic or protein residues. To remove this type of residue can easily be done by using a vacuum cleaner that is fixed with a bristled brush attachment. Following this, a dry-chem sponge cleaning can be done to finish things off.

Fire Damage Restoration

It is important to note that minor fire damage that takes place on a bad day can be cleaned up on your own but the results you achieve may last just for a short term. However, it is still highly recommended for you to engage the professional services of fire damage restoration experts if you are unsure of the proper steps to take. Handling the situation on your own may help you save on some costs, but if you happen to take the wrong steps, you may end up causing an even bigger mess which may be irreversible. This in turn may lead to even heftier damage costs that you need to fork out on top of the D.I.Y solutions you have tried earlier on. Restoration experts are able to assess the extent of the fire damage in your home or at your place of business and recommend the proper techniques and products to use.

Act fast and be quick to engage the professional services of fire damage restoration experts from SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan to keep your situation at bay. Make use of services that offer lasting results.

Understanding Fire Damage Restoration Processes

4/16/2021 (Permalink)

You should never try to attempt fire damage restoration after a fire has occurred. To ensure that your home is safe again, it is important to reach out to a professional fire damage restoration professional to carry out the proper fire restoration process required. As a homeowner, it is important to understand how these processes are carried out.

Confirmation That Property Has Stabilized

The first step to a professional remediation process is to check if the property has stabilized enough for safe entry. A professional will check for signs of damage to the home’s structure and inspect the property carefully from the outside before opening the door. It would be advisable to wait for an inspector to consider the property safe to enter before you do so.

Damage Control

Be cautious of soot stains, rust, corrosion, mold, mildew, and the air quality in the home. Even after the fire has been extinguished, smoke and soot can cause further damage to your home.

  • Soot stains are caused by soot which adheres to the surface and discoloration occurs. Depending on material and time elapsed, soot stains may be removable while soot stains may be permanent for other materials.
  • Mold and mildew form quickly after a fire has occurred due to the fire extinguishing process. If there has been signs of water damage, proper damage restoration processes should be implemented as soon as possible to minimize further damage.
  • Rust and corrosion refer to the risk of any metals that become oxidized after interacting with water. This is important to take note of for small electronics with metal. If components in the electronics corrode, your item may have been damaged beyond repair and there could be a high risk of electric shocks.
  • Air quality is one of the areas which professionals focus on, especially when lingering odors are detected. Smoke damage cleanup is often done with the use of an air scrubber and air mover.

Removal of Items Damaged Beyond Repair

For personal possessions that have been damaged beyond repair, they should be removed with extra caution. This is especially important for electrical appliances or machines. Conversely, items that have not been damaged by the fire should be removed as well to prevent further contamination.

Cleanup Excess Water and Wet Surfaces

Standing water needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible because water may damage your walls or flooring.

Deodorizing, Deep Cleaning, and Stain Removal Begins

Once the damage has been assessed, professionals will begin the appropriate damage restoration process for the property. Taking into consideration the level of damage, they should consult with you to work out the level of priority to work with and you should receive regular updates from them.

How Does Mold Grow In Homes?

How Does Mold Grow In Homes

Mold is an unwanted substance in many areas such as households and office buildings. If you are wondering about how mold develops in homes, you have come to the right place. In this article, we will take you through how mold can spread in your household.

What Is Mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that develops once moisture can be detected. They are tiny spores that can be found on mycelium, which then further forms into hyphae. It can be found almost anywhere, and its growth is inevitable when there is moisture present on any substance. In most cases, it is a challenge to get rid of mold due to its growing spores. These spores are tiny seed-like structures that develop under damp and humid conditions. It is key to remove mold every now and then to create a safe environment in your household.

What Is the Growth Of Mold Like?

These tiny spores give way for mold to reproduce. Since they are microscopic in size, they spread easily through water and wind. They are also able to stay alive for long once they are stuck to fur or any clothing. Many people identify mold on their clothes through stains and the odd odor that it produces.

There are also several conditions that you should take note of to stop mold growth. These include an environment with oxygen, water, food as well as a suitable temperature. Mold is strong enough to withstand unusual environments, which toughens the removal process. Since it can grow both indoors and outdoors, it is important that you check all your household areas such as your windows, vents as well as your open doorways. There is usually excessive moisture in these areas.

How To Prevent Mold?

If you are wondering how to prevent mold, the first step to take is to ensure that your home is not too humid. The humidity level in your household should not surpass 50 percent as moist conditions are a catalyst for mold to grow. You can do so by checking the humidity level more than once a day. Also, be sure to check that your household has smooth air ventilation. Continuous air flow within your household helps to prevent the spread of mold.

Graffiti Problems That Businesses Face

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

If your business has constantly been getting affected by graffiti problems, you must have undergone a lot of stress as cleaning up graffiti often involves a lot of work. Instead of doing everything on your own and getting distracted from your business operations, why not consider hiring a professional cleaning team? They can get the job done as swiftly but with much more convenience for you. Continue reading the article to learn more about the implications of graffiti and how you can prevent them.

Common Problems Caused by Graffiti

Graffiti usually consists of illegible scribbles which often lead to various issues for businesses. Some of the issues are as follows:

Putting in Effort and Spending Money to Clean It Up

When graffiti appears on the exterior of your business, you have to put in effort to clean it up with chemicals. This costs money and affects your operations.

Graffiti Causes Damage to Exterior

Some materials that are used to draw graffiti can be cleaned up pretty easily with a power washer or simply being painted over. However, that is not always the case. Several exterior materials which are porous such as brick walls may disintegrate under the pressure of a power washer. They are also more likely to absorb spray paint which makes them trickier to clean without damaging the outer layer.

Graffiti Spoils Your Business Reputation

A business that is covered in graffiti may be off-putting for patrons. It may appear as though you do not care enough about your reputation by letting your business exterior be left unattended. This is why it is essential for exterior wall cleaning to be done as soon as you find graffiti on it.

Preventing Graffiti on Your Business Exterior

There are several ways you can follow to actually help prevent graffiti from being drawn on your business premises. Below are some tips that you can consider:

Installing Automatic Lighting

Add an automatic lighting system around your premises especially where vandalism is common. Lights that switch on automatically upon detecting motion can help to deter vandals. Graffiti artists prefer to work in an environment where they are less likely to get caught, so a lighted area is definitely not a feasible setting to express their creativity.

Putting Up Signs

Put up signs informing vandals that your premises are installed with security cameras that are watching them around the clock. This will deter them as they do not want to be prosecuted.

Adding Anti-Graffiti Layers

If it has been getting increasingly common for your business to be scribbled with graffiti, you may consider applying a layer of anti-graffiti coating. Such products can help to create a clear protective barrier which will prevent graffiti material from sticking onto the surface. This will also make cleaning so much easier.

Adding Exterior Barriers

If you own the land outside your business premises, you can add barriers that can prevent vandals from getting inside. There are different types and sizes of barriers that you can choose from to suit the needs of your business.

5 Things That Water Damage Repair Specialists Do

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

There are different processes to be done during the evaluation of water damage. Going through the scale of the necessary repair works requires the help of water damage repair specialists who are experts at their job. The article below explains in more details the job scope of these experts so you can know exactly when to consult them.

Identifying the Different Types of Water

There is a total of three different types of water. The very first type is called clean water which is produced by condensation, rain, leaky pipes, and others. Clean water is relatively harmless to clean up on your own.

The second type of water is called gray water. It is slightly dirtier than clean water and it is produced by dishwashers, washing machines, waste-free toilets and more. It may also contain some contaminants. You may wish to clean it up on your own but make sure that you put own protective gears like gloves to protect yourself.

The third type is black water which is produced by serious flooded rivers and lakes or from the sewers. This water contains waste, germs, and other toxic contaminants. Black water can cause implications that are detrimental to your health and should not be cleaned up on your own. Always hire professional restoration specialists to tackle the situation to prevent any serious health issues to yourself and your family.

Inspecting Serious Issues Like Mold

Water repair damage specialists will also help in inspecting serious issues including mildew and mold. They can start developing when the conditions are right in as little as 24 hours. Mold that has thrived for an extended period of time, you need to be very careful as it poses as a long-term issue. Some mold can cause health effects and can cause severe property damage. For small mold, simply get rid of them on your own. For more severe cases of mold infestation, always seek the help of professionals to avoid the mold spores from spreading and getting out of control.

Drying the Water Damage Area

Restoration specialists will first remove all moisture at water damage areas to prevent it from causing further damage to the property. For small leaks, it is still important to be thorough to cover every nook and cranny. We will focus on circulating the air with the aid of several devices such as dehumidifier, fans, and more.

Removing and Clearing Porous Materials

The next step performed by specialists is to move on with the removal of any porous materials found in the water damage areas. These materials include insulation, carpet, fabric, and so on. If they are fully soaked, we will cut them out accordingly so they can be removed swiftly. Water would have damaged them by warping or shrinking them which is further worsened by mildew.

Disinfecting Remaining Materials

After the removal of damaged components, the specialists will focus on disinfecting the entire space using industrial-grade yet safe chemicals. They can help prevent the formation of mold which can cause prolonged damage to your health and property.

Common Fire Incidents In The United States

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Fires can start anywhere and at any time and the injury and damage that they cause can at times be severe. The article below illustrates some of the most common fire incidents in the United States that you can read about to help you in reducing or eliminating the associated risks. By learning some of the important tips that we are about to share, you can save your property and your loved ones from a threatening situation.

Kitchen Fires

The most common type of fire is the kitchen fire. The reason behind why the kitchen is the source of many fire hazards is because it is where electricity, heat, grease, and water come together. Grease fire is the most common type of kitchen fire. It is highly dangerous as it can spread out of control quickly throughout the whole house. Most grease fires occur because a frying pan is left on the stove unattended for an extended period of time. An overheated pan may also cause a fire when the grease inside catches fire. Grease fires cause critical injury and major property damage, so it is important to pay close attention when you are cooking.

Electrical Fires

Electrical fires are caused by different factors such as faulty electrical wiring, faulty appliances, worn out breaker boxes, or improper use of electrical sockets. Older homes also may not have proper wiring to handle the excessive number of electrical appliances being used in a day. Old breaker boxes are designed to automatically shut off the electricity supply when the circuit becomes overloaded. However, worn or broken connections may not activate the breaker switch. Lighting may also cause electrical fires if the system contains improper wiring. The use of light bulbs that come in wattage that is higher than the recommended level may also cause a fire.

Heater Fires

This type of fire is especially common during winter. Portable heating units need to always be equipped with automatic shut-off technology whenever they overheat. However, improper wiring or worn-out appliances may eventually still cause a fire. Coil space heaters are just as hazardous as their coils will ignite anything that is combustible. It is recommended to place your space heater at least three feet away from anything combustible such as bedding, curtains, furniture, and clothing. Do not use space heaters with extension cords as they generate high levels of electricity which may start a fire.

Smoking-Related Fires

Fires caused by cigarettes cause at least 1,000 deaths in the United States per annum. Majority of these fatalities do not even concern the smoker who is the main culprit of each of the situations. Most smoking fires get started by embers that ignite on bedding, furniture, and trash cans. This is why smokers need to always extinguish their cigarettes completely before emptying their ashtrays into the trash. Never smoke in bed or when you are tired or drowsy. Flammable surfaces such as chairs, couches, or beds should also always be free of ashtrays as they may tip over and cause a fire.

What You Need To Know About Mold Season

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Mold develops when its spores that are airborne get into contact with moisture and several sources of food such as dirt, wood, and paper. Moisture can be found in areas like leaky pipes and roofs, humidifiers, flooded places, and other water damage sections of a building. Mold growth can get ugly as it involves unpleasant odors and damages to the structure of a building. When you are aware of mold season and its implications, you can engage mold remediation services to get the issue resolved swiftly.

Mold Season

Mold season refers to the time when mold can easily thrive due to several factors like climate and location. Mold can grow and spread any time but there are certain periods when mold growth is widespread. Mold growth is most rampant from early spring to middle of fall but its peak is around late summer. Always check areas that may have excess water during weather changes such as when snow thaws and during rainy days.

Winter is the season when mold turns dormant but it is not gone completely. Mold basically hibernates during winter where temperatures are low. Areas that experience mild winters may even witness mold growth all year long. After being dormant during winter, mold can move on to find other damp places to call home. You can prevent this by pouring bleach at the locations where mold grows.

Early Spring

You can expect dormant mold to grow back again during spring. It is the worst season for mold especially in areas that experience heavy rain. The lots of moisture created from the spring showers provide a suitable environment for mold to invade. Check areas where there are standing water such as your basement, attic, windows, crawlspaces, and doors. Spot any crumbling on your drywall and pay attention to any strange odors as these are symptoms of mold issues or hidden water damage.

Summer is the worst season for mold in regions that experience high levels of humidity. Kitchens and bathrooms are both places that are prone to mold growth due to consistent use of appliances with hot water. Air conditioning units cut down on humidity from inside the house but the extracted water may leak into basements or crawl spaces due to poor ventilation.

Mid Fall

Mold growth slows down during fall and begins to hibernate during winter. Fall is when it becomes the easiest to handle mold as it becomes dormant due to the cold. Homeowners also do not have to worry over humidity or rain but it is advisable to remove any mold during this season before winter comes.

Mold Allergy Season

The period from early spring to mid fall is when allergies become the most severe. Mold season can trigger health effects and each season can affect you differently. Spring is typically when mold continues to thrive after winter whereas summer is when mold spore count is particularly high due to humidity in the air and fall works like spring where allergies get into the picture.

By understanding each season correctly and their relationship with mold growth, homeowners can better manage their mold problem.

Top Tips for Storm Damage Recovery

Top Tips for Storm Damage Recovery

It is easy to be overwhelmed by what is left to tackle after the storm has hit you hard. Do not despair as help is on its way. First and foremost, prepare yourself for what is about to come up next to be able to handle the storm damage aftermath with grace and great knowledge.

Educating Yourself

Be sure to know your rights and what you are entitled to as a homeowner. Since you first moved into your current house, have you ever had a need to replace the roof and how many occasions have you ever followed up with an insurance claim?

Always know how and when to file a claim. After the disaster situation has settled, contact your insurer to find out what your options are. Notify them of your current state and what are the subsequent steps to be taken before a claim can be made. Do not hesitate to get into details by inquiring regarding every aspect of your insurance coverage including any reports, cash value, deductibles, depreciation, and more.

Selecting a Contractor

This is not the time to be naïve especially when there are plenty of people out there waiting to take advantage of your vulnerable situation. Just about anyone can claim that they are a contractor. Thus, adequate research is necessary to ensure you get ahold of a licensed contractor who is certified to work within your city with necessary permits on hand.

Assessing the Damage

Look around every nook and cranny of your property to roughly estimate the scale of the losses as an entirety. Inspect your front and back yards as well for damages incurred on any structures or furniture pieces. If your vehicle had been parked outside, consider that as a separate section out of your total damages as its insurance claim will fall under a different category.

Filing the Claim

Once you are confident that the situation is well under control, go ahead and file the loss claim. This warrants an adjuster to pay a visit to the damaged property to assess the losses thoroughly. An evaluation report will be generated to be submitted to your insurer for a reimbursement. Once the settlement amount is well underway, it is time to launch the restoration project. The earlier you get the contractor starting work on your property, the faster you can settle down and allow things to fall back into place like before.

Remember that you are not alone! Never let yourself fall into an even bigger predicament by allowing the problem to drag on and cause your property condition to deteriorate further. Take control and take matters into your own hands! Nothing is impossible with professional help around.

Here at SERVPRO, our experts understand that time is of the essence when dealing with storm damage. Work with our team of professionals to formulate a plan to get your storm damage problems well under control to get you back on track!

How to Avoid MRSA Infections?

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

Staphylococcus aureus is a surprisingly widespread type of bacteria. Commonly known as Staph, approximately thirty percent of all healthy humans are carriers of Staph in some way. This bacterial is typically found living on the surface of our skin and inside of our nostrils. Although it exists without affecting the individual, it can result in severe infections through small cuts in some cases. The danger when this happens is that antibiotics do not work on a rising number of Staph bacteria strains. A minor infection can rapidly turn into a potential fatal emergency. Since it is difficult to treat, following some precautions to avoid MRSA infections is important.

What is MRSA?

MRSA refers to Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. This type of bacteria is able to withstand common antibiotics used against bacterial diseases. There are 3 main types of MRSA:

  • Community-acquired (CA-MRSA): This refers to any bacteria that is found outside of a medical facility.
  • Livestock-acquired (LA-MRSA): This is commonly found in the nasal swabs of humans who work in livestock handling kennels and facilities.
  • Healthcare-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA): First identified in the 1960s, it is called healthcare acquired due to how prevalent it was in hospitals.

Where can you get MRSA?

Although MRSA thrives best in moist and warm areas, it is also able to live for a long period of time on hard surfaces. Environments where many people come into contact with shared surfaces are more dangerous. This includes the following places:

  • Shopping carts
  • Elevator buttons
  • Doorknobs
  • Gym Equipment
  • Keyboards
  • Flush Levers

Although there are some treatments available, there are many circumstances where the bacteria are resistant to all available treatments. Hence, taking the necessary preventions against MRSA infections in the first place is extremely important.

MRSA Precautions

Restrict antibiotic use

Using many different kinds of antibiotics is related to an increased risk of the bacteria becoming more resistant, which aids in colonization.

Shower after Sweating

As MRSA thrives in moist environments, it is important to shower immediately after you sweat. Do not share your towels with others.

Wash your Hands

Regularly wash your hands for a minimum of fifteen seconds, before drying with a disposable towel. Do remember to bring along hand sanitizers based in alcohol for times when you are not able to wash your hands.

So as to reduce the spread of infections, especially in hospitals, screening for people with MRSA should be carried out. Some ways of doing it is to swab the nostrils and isolate the bacteria.

Cover your Wounds

It is important to keep your wounds covered and clean. This applies to infected people as well as those who are not infected, reducing the risk of spreading to others.

No Injection of Illicit Drugs

For those who take intravenous drugs, including HIV, Hepatitis C and MRSA, the occurrence of life-threatening infections are higher.

For individuals who do not practice good hygiene, or stay away from skin-to-skin contact, they should be isolated so as to avoid the infections from spreading further. It is also suggested to isolate laundry and everyday appliances.

3 Common Types of Floodwater

12/22/2020 (Permalink)

It is common for homeowners to immediately want to get to work after a flood to salvage whatever is left of their home. However, you could be doing more harm than good without first knowing what has actually hit you. Different types of floodwater have different causes and effects on one’s health, so only handle what is within your capability and leave the rest to the professionals.

Floodwater 1: Clean Water

  • This is pretty straightforward, so you can go ahead and get those towels and any other retrievable fabric pieces you can find to kickstart the floodwater absorption process. However, be sure to pick up the pace before this type of floodwater changes into the next state. Get everyone to join in the effort to settle down as soon as possible and take the opportunity to bond as a team to keep spirits high.

Floodwater 2: Grey Water

  • This is the next state which had transitioned from clean water. It is normal to feel skeptical about even getting into contact with this type of floodwater because you never know what is flowing beneath. There could be contaminants of a chemical, physical, or even biological nature, usually derived from kitchen or bathroom malfunctions.

Floodwater 3: Unsanitary

  • This is the deadliest state floodwaters could get into. Thus, be absolutely wary of your surroundings while handling this form of floodwater to prevent any detrimental adverse effects on your health and that of your loved ones. You could be getting yourself into a situation of pathogenic and toxigenic agents’ category, which has dissolved silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, or toxic organic substances. Thus, save yourself the trouble and your health to stay fit to storm through the aftermath.

Cleanup Process

There are so many different ways and approaches that you can get your hands on through various online tips and guidelines. Nevertheless, you could be doing it all wrong when you fail to correctly distinguish the real type of floodwater that has flowed in your home at the very initial important stage. Therefore, there has to be a certain level of guarantee before you can truly say that you are safe from harm that could cause you to become sick or be left with a home that is only cosmetically free of floodwaters.

Cleanup Guarantee

What is this guarantee that we are talking about? It is the sense of assurance that will leave you feeling comfortable and put your mind at ease again as though no natural disaster had ever struck your home sweet home. When Do You Need Duct Cleaning?

12/22/2020 (Permalink)

Having periodical air duct cleaning service done is important. Read on to find out when you should engage professional air duct cleaning services!

When Do You Need Professional Air Duct Cleaning Services

Everybody wants a clean house. But, what if your house is not as clean as you thought? Even though your floors and surfaces may be dust-free, it does not mean areas that you cannot see and reach are clean. Unfortunately, your air duct contains a lot of dirt, dust, and allergens as they work frequently to provide cooled or heated air around your home. As air conditioning systems draw in air from the outside world to cool the house, it is easy for contaminants to enter your home.

Cleaning air ducts is a complicated process that requires specific knowledge. As such, you should always engage professionals for cleaning services to help you do a thorough job. If you are unsure of whether your air duct requires cleaning, read on to find out some signs of a dirty air duct.

Presence of Mold in Your Air Conditioning System

Your air conditioning system should undergo maintenance and clean periodically. Professionals recommend your system to be serviced at least twice a year. Due to the condensation that results from cooling air, mold growth is a possibility, especially if the climate you live in is a humid one. If your technician informs you that your air conditioning system has mold, you should ask to see the evidence. Once confirmed, you can contact a mold expert. Air conditioning technicians may not have the credentials to get rid of mold, so you should ensure you get a certified professional to do so.

Even if mold is found, it does not necessarily mean your air ducts are affected. However, it makes it highly possible. It is important to engage professionals to check to make sure.

Your Home is Newly Renovated

Construction sites are very messy. Even if contractors clean up and cordon off areas to keep the rest of the house not undergoing construction tidy, little pieces of debris and dust will find their way in. Unless your air conditioning system is not turned on and kept completely covered up throughout the construction work, it is possible for the dust and dirt to find their way to your air ducts. Furthermore, construction dust contains matter that can be harmful when you breathe it in. You should call professionals to clean your air ducts before any other major problems arise.

Your Home is Dusty Despite Cleaning

Cleaning up dust is not the most exciting activity, but is something we have to do often. However, if you notice that surfaces and areas of your house seem to always have a layer of dust even if you just cleaned the area, you probably need to clean your air ducts. You can take a look at the supply and return vents in your home. Do they look dirty? Go one step further to check by removing the vent cover and looking into the ductwork. If they are covered in dust, it is time to schedule a professional air duct cleaning service.

Increasing Cost for Heating or Cooling Air

Every year, the costs incurred from switching on the air conditioning and heater should be relatively similar and predictable. However, if you notice your bill increasing even though you find your usage to be about the same, you may have a problem. In some cases, the air duct is so dirty that air cannot flow through the system efficiently and freely. As such, the air conditioner needs to work harder to maintain the temperature of the room, thus consuming more electricity and resulting in higher utility bills.
If you are looking for professionals to help clean your air ducts, look no further than SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan. Our team of professionals will be able to help you with keeping your air ducts clean. Feel free to contact us for more information about our services today!

What You Need to Know About Frozen Pipes

12/11/2020 (Permalink)

Identifying Frozen Pipes During The Upcoming Winter Season

During winter, homeowners are faced with many possible home problems that require repair. When the temperature starts to drop below zero degrees, a common problem homeowners encounter is a frozen water pipe. A frozen water pipe is dangerous and can be very costly to repair. When water freezes, it expands; this results in increased pressure in the lines, to the point where these pipes cannot hold the water anymore. If you can spot a frozen water pipe early, it can save you the trouble of a burst water pipe. For instance, if you turn on the faucet and only get a small trickle of water, you may have a frozen water pipe. If you are unsure about maintaining your pipes, you should engage professionals to help you prevent them from bursting.

Problems that Arise from a Frozen Pipe

If you miss the initial warning signs, the problem can get worse and bring about several complications. These include:

Increased possibility of bursting: A frozen pipe can burst at any time and bring about a host of problems. If a water pipe bursts outdoors as you will need to deal with damaged water in harsh weather and a slippery condition.
Lack of running water: It is incredibly inconvenient without a proper supply of running water. It makes simple daily tasks like showering and washing the dishes difficult, and can interfere with the activities you do on a daily basis.

Identifying Frozen Pipes

There are many water pipes in a house, both outside and inside. Every bathroom, shower, and sink has its own pipes. The good news is that you are able to identify frozen pipes before they burst from these warning signs.

Strange sells that come from the faucet: if your faucet gives off a weird smell, it may be a sign of a frozen pipe. If the pipe is blocked from ice, the only way to release the order is through the drain or faucet.
Visible frost on the pipe: If your pipes are exposed, you may be able to see frost on the surface of the pipe. If there is the presence of frost, it is likely your pipe is frozen.
Temperature is extremely low: Pipes will not freeze if it is not cold enough. However, once the temperature of your environment drops below the freezing point, you should start to take precautionary measures in order to prevent your pipes from becoming frozen.

Getting Ahead of Frozen Pipes

8/29/2020 (Permalink)

A dripping faucet can be helpful this winter. Letting your faucet drip helps keep the pipes damn and avoids them freezing over.

Although the frosty breeze and sparkling snow can be breathtaking during winter, there are risks we must be aware of. Winter can be enchanting but this is the season where frozen pipes can be an awful disaster. This change in weather can cause temperatures to drop to extremely low levels and can cause pipes in your home to freeze and burst. If pipes are not properly insulated or if there are cracks or gaps where the pipe enters your home, this can cause the pipes to freeze easily. During the dramatic temperatures, water freezes and expands continually, and eventually, the pipes can burst. Be sure to maintain and check your pipes regularly to help avoid these situations. If you find yourself in this position, you can contact our location at SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan/Financial District and we will be glad to provide our services.

5 Common Upholstery Cleaning Mistakes

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

Sofas and mattresses are one of the most important items in your house. They are places you sit and sleep at and therefore, it is pertinent that you take proper care of them so as to ensure the overall health of your home. Keeping your house clean and healthy will improve the quality of indoor air, making it a much better environment overall for you and your loved ones.

Cleaning sofas and mattresses are pretty straightforward and easy, as long as you follow the guidelines given by the manufacturers. However, not many homeowners follow the guidelines and ended up making huge mistakes that can damage their furniture. Read on to learn about the top 5 most common upholstery cleaning mistakes people make, and how you can avoid them.

Ignoring the Guidelines Given by The Manufacturer

Usually, directions will be given by the manufacturer on the product labels on how you can clean your furniture. Sales assistants at the furniture store will also advise you on the kind of maintenance needed for your furniture when you purchase the product. Different materials would require a different kinds of cleaning techniques and therefore it is important that you follow the guidelines given so as to keep your furniture in tip-top condition for as long as possible. Failure to follow them may result in you making an irreversible mistake on your upholstery.

Using the Wrong Products for Cleaning

Not all cleaning products are suitable for your upholstery. You have to read the label on your cleaning product to make sure that the product does not pose any risk to the upholstery. Not only will the hazardous product damage your furniture, but it may also even cause health problems such as skin rashes, breathing problems, or eye irritation. To ensure the health of your loved one, make sure to read the label on your furniture to see what products are right for your furniture. If you are still unsure which product to use, do contact your furniture manufacturer or retailer for product recommendation.

Soaking Your Furniture With Water

The biggest mistake homeowners are likely to make would be to soak your upholstery with water. Water may remain in your furniture, causing mold to grow over time. Mold growth is especially bad for furniture and can cause many health effects too.

Not Hiring the Professionals

Many people think that they can clean their furniture themselves and do need to hire a professional upholstery cleaning company because it is too expensive. However, this is not the case. Cleaning your upholstery yourselves may dirty and damage your furniture even more. If your furniture is frequently dirtied, it would be better to engage a professional to help you. An upholstery cleaning service provider can make sure to remove all stains, dirt, and bad odors from your furniture, making it as new as when you first bought it.

Hiring the Wrong Professionals

Yes, you should hire a professional to clean your furniture. But you have to hire the right one. If not, you may end up damaging your furniture or having to pay more to get the work redone. Therefore, do research carefully when finding an upholstery cleaning company. You can get some recommendations from your furniture retailers as they would understand the furniture better. It is also good to find out the type of cleaning products and techniques your cleaning service provider use, and whether it is suitable for your furniture.

SERVPRO has over 40 years of experience in the cleaning industry. Their team of professionals is trained to the highest standards and only uses the best cleaning equipment. To learn more about their cleaning services, contact them here!

Fay Is On The Way!

7/10/2020 (Permalink)

Tropical Storm, Fay, is making its way up the East Coast. The storm is set to bring heavy rains prompting areas to flood. Make sure your property is set up for this type of weather by securing any loose items outside and moving items away from windows and doors. Be sure to account that all employees or family members are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.  If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for first responders.  While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.  Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.  Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.  Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains). Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged. If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream, or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.  Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.  Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.  Return only when authorities indicate it is safe. Stay safe everyone!

Avoid Using Bleach To Clean Mold

7/10/2020 (Permalink)

Are you thinking of using bleach to remove mold? If you are, then read this article first before you decide on doing anything.

Since we usually use chlorine bleach to clean items, we may naturally assume that chlorine bleach can be used to remove mold as well. However, that is not the case! You should never use bleach to clean mold. Bleach cannot remove mold and in some cases, it might even encourage mold to grow where it was not present before. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has strongly recommended against the use of bleach for mold remediation. But before we explain to you why using bleach to remove mold is a big fat NO, let’s go through the basics of the mold first to get a better understanding of how it works.

What Is Mold?

Mold is a type of fungus, that thrives on moisture and reproduces through lightweight spores that travel through the air. Mold can live almost anywhere, both indoors and outdoors. In fact, we are exposed to mold every day. Once the mold has located the perfect environment, it can grow extremely fast. Therefore, if your house has recently suffered from a flood, water damage, or burst pipes, there is a high chance that mold is already in your home.

Contact A Reliable Mold Removal Specialist!

So, we now know that bleach cannot remove mold, what should we do instead? Mold can be extremely tricky to remove and if dealt wrongly, you may even exacerbate the problem. The right way would be to engage a mold removal specialist to help you. At SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan, we have a team of highly professional experts that can help you with your mold assessment and remediation. We provide 24/7 emergency service and use advanced mold remediation techniques, giving you the best customer service possible. So, wait no further can call us today!

4 Common Types of Storm Damage

7/10/2020 (Permalink)

Has your house been hit by a storm? Storm damage can be a really scary and dangerous thing. It can cause immense damage to your house, compromising the safety of you and your loved ones. As a homeowner, it is important that you are aware of the 4 most common types of storm damage and how you can deal with them effectively. It will also be useful if you can keep a reliable and trustworthy roofer’s contact detail with you in case you are hit with storm damage and require emergency roof repair service. SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan is a leading roofer in the United States, with over 50 years of expertise, making sure you get the help you need for your home.

Wind Damage

The strong winds from the storm can cause your roof to sustain serious damage. This is because the strong winds weaken your roof, lifting the shingles and causing cracks. Apart from that, flying debris in the wind can also cause holes in your roof and siding. Do look for any missing or damaged shingles on your roof and around your property. Approach your roofer immediately if you discover damage so as to avoid more costly problems.

Hail Damage

Hail damage can affect both your roof and your siding. Keep a lookout for shingles or missing bits of your roof. The penetration of asphalt shingles can lead to problems such as leaks and cracks. Hail damage is one of the most difficult types of storm damage to be identified. Any form of a hailstorm can cause long-term problems for your house and therefore we would strongly recommend that you engage a professional to help you inspect your roof for damage.

Water Damage

Water damage can be extremely dangerous and troublesome as it affects your entire house. It can seep into the walls and grounds of your property, compromising the structural integrity of your home. Not only so, but it also poses a fire hazard and mold growth, which may lead to several health problems. If you feel that your house may be suffering from water damage, you got to approach your contractor immediately. Water damage needs to be addressed immediately and swiftly to prevent extensive water damage to your home.

Impact Damage

Impact damage is normally caused by objects such as fallen trees and storm damage debris. The damage caused may not noticeable immediately and may only be problematic months or years later. Often, a complete replacement of the roof is needed for this type of damage. However, if only a side of the roof is damaged, a partial replacement of the damaged part is also possible.

At SERVPRO, we specialize in different kinds of storm damage. If your home has sustained any of the roof damage mentioned above, do contact us immediately. Storm damage has to be fixed immediately. Contact us at (973) 869-5801 today!

Explaining the Meaning of the Word Biohazard

6/8/2020 (Permalink)

The biohazard symbol is as recognizable as the red-white STOP sign and the big yellow smiley emoji but what does the biohazard symbol truly represent? It often leaves a lasting impression and is usually perceived as an indicator of a potentially risky zone. However, where does the biohazard symbol really originated from?

Biohazard Symbol Origin

The biohazard symbol which we must have encountered at least once throughout our entire life was first created by Charles Baldwin in the year 1966 along with Robert Runkle. They were from Dow Chemicals and the National Institutes of Health respectively. Fast forward to five decades later, the biohazard symbol has emerged as a universal logo for common understanding amongst industries like medical, waste removal, and science. The biohazard logo has gained so much popularity that it has made its debut in cameo appearances in modern platforms like video games, movies, and more.

Charles Baldwin first came up with the idea of the symbol as a result of working with an excessive list of dangerous chemicals. He wanted to make it obvious to people not within the industry to know exactly what to expect and to avoid the chemicals being transported. He knew exactly how the symbol should look like and it should be easily recognizable, set apart from existing symbols, no fixed up or down position, acceptable by all groups, and specific yet ambiguous.

Biohazard Symbol Display

The only rule in displaying the biohazard symbol is to ensure it is showcased with enough contrast to optimize its visibility. Some color combinations of the symbol include black and white, black and yellow, white on red, and other contrasting combinations. The symbol also needs to be large enough to create an impression that lasts.

Biohazard Categories

Some of the biohazard waste categories within the medical fields that utilize the biohazard symbol are as follows:

  • Solid biohazardous wastes (no sharps)
  • Liquid biohazardous wastes
  • Biohazardous sharp objects
  • Pathological wastes
  • Soil collection and disposal

Biohazardous products comprise more than just medical waste materials even if that is the entire perception of the general public. Any content that may cause radiation to inflict sickness deserves to display the biohazard symbol. This is the exact reason why it is easy to spot the symbol at any cleanup areas of a crime scene and biohazard locations that deal with dead bodies, blood, and biohazard vehicles.

Biohazard Symbol in a Modern Setting

Today, the biohazard symbol can be spotted in modern settings when being used by subcultural groups, LGBTQ communities, and awareness societies. They utilize the symbol with a twist that holds an ironic message which the participants hope to convey across through the famous logo. Only a certain percentage of viewers would often catch the hidden agenda of the biohazard symbol usage by these groups but the general term the symbol often refers to is simply “danger”. Regardless of the given scenario, simply stay away should you come across such a symbol in the future.

Why You Shouldn't Use Over-the-Counter Mold Tests

5/11/2020 (Permalink)

Over-the-counter mold test kits are often touted as a cheap and accurate DIY method to test for the presence of mold in homes. In fact, you might have even considered buying one at the nearest DIY home improvement store. You should, however, think twice before getting one because such kits are not all that they are cracked up to be. Here are some reasons why.

Accuracy Problems

Over-the-counter mold test kits are often advertised as being able to accurately detect the presence of mold in your home. However, these may be tall claims as such devices are hardly ever accurate in identifying mold. Even if the results were reliable and accurate, it is difficult to interpret them correctly without any professional experience in doing so.

Lack of Inspection

While over-the-counter mold test kits purportedly detect the presence of mold, they cannot pinpoint the specific location where this mold exists. This renders the reading rather useless, even if it is said to be accurate. In order to precisely locate mold in your home, a professional inspection needs to be conducted. This comprises sampling, as well as inspecting for issues related to mold that are usually not obvious to laypersons who lack professional experience in identifying and handling mold. As a result, even the Environmental Protection Agency recommends enlisting the services of professionals to deal with mold.

Lack of Certification

Over-the-counter mold test kits are usually made in labs that are not certified or endorsed by accredited agencies. These kits also lack important documentation known as a chain of custody, which describes how the item has moved from its original handler to the next party. As a result, such mold test kits lack legitimacy and should be avoided.

Lack of Expiry Date

Over-the-counter mold test kits do not come with expiry dates. This means that they are often displayed on store shelves until they are sold or disposed of. If you do buy such a kit, then there is a possibility that it is several years old and you will not be able to tell how much it has been exposed or handled prior to being purchased and brought home.

Lack of Necessity

If the mold in your home is visible, then there is no need to buy an over-the-counter mold test kit. Visible mold in itself is a confirmation that mold is present in your home, and hence the next course of action should be the removal of the mold in accordance with industry guidelines. It is a waste of time and money to try and detect mold after it has made itself obvious.

Over-the-counter mold test kits may be a waste of your time, energy, and money. Instead, consider working with professionals. With the latest equipment and highly trained mold remediation specialists, we at SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan can help restore your property quickly and effectively. Our fast response can reduce mold damage, prevent further damage, and reduce the overall cost of remediation. What are you waiting for? Contact us now!

Did Storm Damage Destroy Your Roof?

5/11/2020 (Permalink)

Your home’s roof is constantly exposed to the elements and bears the brunt of seasonal changes and harsh weather conditions. To ensure that your roof stays in good condition, it is vital to check on it, especially in the aftermath of weather events like storms. A strong storm can inflict various kinds of storm damage on the roof. Signs of such damage include wet walls, water spots on the ceiling, faulty or missing roof shingles, and damaged roof flashing. If left unchecked, even something as small as a leak can cause more serious damage to the roof and your home’s interior, i.e. water damage. Here are some types of roof damage to look out for after a storm has occurred.

Damage by Wind

Strong windstorms can cause damage to your shingles, puncturing them, removing them, or even just lifting them off a little. When this happens, spots are left open in your roof, and leaks can occur through them when it rains. Additionally, flashing can go missing along the edges of the roof, skylights, chimneys, and vents. Windstorms can also cause debris to fall onto your roof and damage it. It is important to conduct a complete assessment of your roof after a strong windstorm occurs, as damage caused by such storms are usually not always apparent.

Damage by Hail

Come spring and fall, hail tends to be the most common reason behind roof damage. Hailstorms can create holes and dings in your roof, especially in asphalt shingles. These can give rise to more serious problems immediately. However, hail is also capable of causing less obvious damage that may go undiscovered until it becomes severe enough to give rise to more damage.

Damage by Rain

Damage caused by rainstorms is the most common and obvious type of storm damage that can happen to your roof. The integrity of your roof is challenged when the internal layers of your roof get exposed to moisture. This gives way to a host of other problems such as decay, mold, leaks, and structural damage, all of which are indicators of damage caused by rain. Such problems may mean that you need to replace your roof soon.

It is imperative that you inspect your roof for damages after a storm has occurred. However, it can sometimes be hard to spot signs of damage because they are not always obvious. Professional roofing experts can help you spot these signs of damage and fix them promptly. In fact, the National Roofing Contractors Association recommends that homeowners enlist the services of professional roofing experts at least twice a year to inspect their roofs. It is hence imperative that you act on it as fast as you can after a storm occurs. At SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan, our storm damage specialists understand how to look out for damage on your roof and can help you fix issues before it is too late. Contact our team of professionals, who can advise you on how best to protect your roof and your home from future storms.

What Should Homeowners Do After Fire Damage?

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

One of the most seriously devastating things to happen to any family and/or property is fire damage. To make matters worse, in an attempt to save money, corners are constantly cut on fire insurance claims by insurance companies. Homes are completely destroyed, and personal belongings lost forever in fires. Getting a hard time on your insurance claim from the insurance company through which you have your homeowner's policy is the absolute last thing you need!

To add insult to injury, however, even moderate fires cannot be put out without copious amounts of water. That's going to mean water damage to your belongings and in/on your home. It's not the fault of the fire department, of course. They did everything they could to save your home but had to use a lot of water to do so.

How can you keep headaches to a minimum where fire damage is concerned? Here are a few tips.

Check Your Policy Before the Unthinkable Occurs

Does your homeowner's insurance have "replacement coverage"? Your policy may only stipulate that for the personal items lost, you can get nothing more than the actual cash value. You may choose to opt for a replacement policy, particularly if the things in your home have aged.

Here's an example: You may only get $25 for your tired, old living room set on Craigslist – because that's all it's really worth – but it's going to cost you many times that to replace it.

Is The Condition of Your Property Secure?

You may be required by your homeowner's coverage policy, in order to minimize property damage or harm, to take reasonable steps. This is referred to as a duty to mitigate damage, in short terms. It's relatively easy to do through small steps as in the following scenario: If you find a massive pipe burst, turn off the water and/or cover areas around the leak with plastic wrap. It seems like common sense, more or less, but it's going to make a big difference.

Are You Watching Your Living Expenses?

A “loss of use clause” is included in the homeowner's policies. That means that while you're out of your home, you are entitled to adequate living expense reimbursement. This does, however, only apply to additional living expenses such as the difference between what it's costing you to live somewhere now and what it would have cost you to live in your home, ordinarily.

Say you’re spending $400 a week while eating most of your meals at home. But now with the house fire, you’re spending $500 a week because you are eating out more often. The additional $100 spent is the only thing you'll be able to claim.

Have a Claim? File It Right Away!

Once your home has been damaged by a fire, do not hesitate to file your claim. In fact, this could well be a requirement of your insurance holder. Put a call into your agent as soon as possible. They will likely ask for a "proof of loss claim". This is where you'll list the value of each thing you lost in an itemized manner. You may not receive a claim adjuster in expedited fashion if you wait a long time to file your claim.

Quick Action Is Important

Most often, along with fire damage comes water damage. The important thing to remember here is that reaction time should be as timely as possible. The longer water damage sits unattended, the more problems will arise, including toxic mold and decay. We, at SERVPRO, have experts who understand that, when dealing with fire and water damage, time is of the essence. To formulate a plan to solve your water and fire damage problems according to your precise to your needs, work with our team of professionals.

Should You Remediate All types of Mold?

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

There are more scenarios for mold problems than you may realize. Different solutions are called for in different situations. The bottom line, your best bet is to call a professional remediation service if you have a mold issue. This will help prevent the mold from coming back as well as getting rid of it. For those on an extremely tight budget, however, there are some things that homeowners can do on their own to try to alleviate a mold issue in some cases.

So, you have a mold problem. Is it time to call in the pros or is this something you can take care of your own? Let's take a look at when the pros are the only ones who should be taking care of a mold problem and when to think about a do-it-yourself solution.

Remediation Weighed Against Removal

For those not aware, mold remediation and mold removal are two different things. To remove all mold is a tall order and very nearly impossible. Mold spores, even after a thorough cleaning, can remain because they are microscopic and hard to detect. They may cause no issues because they can be dormant. They take on a life of their own once activated, however, and growth begins. Mold remediation services on a professional level are the best course of action here.

When it's time to call in a professional service for mold remediation, you want a qualified company that fully comprehends the science involved in mold prevention, mold removal, mold growth, and mold itself. To completely remediate the mold in your business or home, only the professionals have the expertise and training required. The remediation of mold focuses on getting normal mold levels back into existence and at a natural concentration.

The Process of Remediation

Frequently, following major water damage resulting from a leak, flood, etc., mold problems will rear their ugly heads. Remember, there's every chance that mold will return if you don't identify its original source. Once again, remediation crew professionals come in handy here because they know the common causes of subsequent mold that follows water exposure. To identify spores and the type of mold present, they will begin by taking air samples. They will determine the best way to get rid of mold and the extent of the contamination.

When Is It Okay to Do It Yourself?

There are everyday solutions through which mold can sometimes be attacked. A little elbow grease and the right kind of cleaner can help solve minor mold problems in bathrooms, near hot water heaters and sump pumps, along with sinks, and in the thresholds of exterior doors. Use a solution of 1 to 9 bleach and water for more stubborn mold growth. Spray the area and wipe it down. This is for mold growing in small areas on surfaces that are easy to clean such as sinks, tubs, tile, metal, and glass.

Caution! If you have health problems that are worsened by mold exposure you should never consider removing mold on your own! Additionally, if mold is growing on or in materials that are hard to clean (such as carpet), or if you're simply unsure of the best way to go about the removal, do not hesitate to call in a mold remediation professional.

Are Dehumidifiers Designed to Kill Mold?

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

What is one of the most frustrating scenarios for a homeowner? It's mold! It hides in places you never think to look like remote basement corners, down in crawl spaces, behind walls, and more. You can't ignore it, even though it tries very hard to hide (often in plain sight). Innumerable health effects can be caused by mold and it has the potential to take the very structure of your home and damage it to severe levels. You must find a way to kill mold! But how do you go about it?

It is not impossible to remediate mold, but it can be difficult. Some people think that a dehumidifier will solve the problem. But will it?

Growing Mold

In environments where it is most dark and moist, mold thrives. It requires a food source, however, in addition to moisture. That can be cotton, drywall, wood, etc. You will most often detect mold in laundry rooms, bathrooms, attics, and basements. As soon as possible, you must nip mold problems in the bud because things will get worse the longer you wait and allow mold to prosper.

The Job of a Dehumidifier

Long story short, the humidity level in your home is reduced by a dehumidifier. Humidity is increased in your home any time water evaporates. You wash the dishes, lay your clothes out to dry, or take a shower…and the humidity in your home rises. As the humidity intensifies, mold finds the perfect conditions for growth. It seems only natural that to take care of the problem, a dehumidifier would be used.

Killing Mold – Is It Really the Dehumidifier's Job?

Humidity isn't the singular source of the type of moisture mold thrives on, though it is a biggie. Leaky roofs, flood-prone basements, and burst pipes can also be mold infestation contributors. Your humidity problem will be lessened with a dehumidifier. But if the mold is being caused by a persistent leak, the dehumidifier can't be expected to solve that issue. Mold will not be killed by merely tackling your humidity problem. Though existing mold won't be killed outright, the dehumidifier can help discourage mold growth, however.

Getting Rid of Mold

Okay, if not with a humidifier, how are you going to get rid of the mold in your home? First of all, you have to remove it. After that, whatever was causing it to grow must be removed, as well. Only half the equation can be solved with a dehumidifier if more than a humid environment is the cause of mold.

Existing mold spores most be gotten rid of! For true, complete mold remediation, acquiring the services of a professional is your best bet. That's the best way to eliminate not just the mold but the problem causing it.

So, to answer the question of whether or not a dehumidifier will take care of your mold problem and kill it – no, it will not! Does that mean that you should forgo a dehumidifier? It does not. A dehumidifier will help stop mold from coming back once you have completely removed it from your home. But, again, you have to completely remove the mold, the spores, and the cause of moisture to truly remedy the situation.

Three Types of Common Floodwater

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

It is common for homeowners to immediately want to get to work after a flood to try to salvage whatever is left of their home. You could, however, be doing more harm than good without first knowing what has actually hit you. Different types of floodwater have different causes and effects onto one’s health, so only handle what is within your capability and leave the rest to the professionals.

Floodwater 1: Clean Water

  • This is pretty straightforward so you can go ahead and get those towels and any other retrievable fabric pieces you can find to kickstart the floodwater absorption process.

It is totally fine to feel skeptical about even getting into contact with this type of floodwater because you never know what is flowing beneath. There could be contaminants of a chemical, physical or even biological nature which usually derive from kitchen or bathroom malfunctions.

Floodwater 3: Unsanitary

  • This is the deadliest state floodwaters could get into. Thus, be absolutely wary of your surroundings while handling this form of floodwater to prevent any detrimental adverse effects on your health and that of your loved ones. You could be getting yourself into a situation of pathogenic and toxigenic agents’ category which has dissolved silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals or toxic organic substances.

SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan is that guarantee you need to get your mind and health off of things and simply lay back and relax while our professional cleanup team get down and dirty with all the strenuous and exhausting cleaning up. How Long Does Water Damage Take to Ruin a Home in Lower Manhattan?

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can become worse over a long period of time and is extremely annoying to a homeowner. The best way to deal with it is to act as fast as possible and rectify the problem immediately. Prolonging the problem might cause health risks and potentially destroy your precious belongings that are irreplaceable or even important documents.

In the First Few Minutes of Water Damage

It is important to note that water can travel extremely fast and spread very quickly in your home. In the first few minutes, it can diffuse into everything that it comes into contact with-imagine your carpets and wallpaper becoming increasingly wet. In the initial stage, the first items that potentially can suffer from damage include your paper goods. This consists of your paper documents or books. They can become irreversibly damaged as the water changes the structure of the paper and dilutes the ink. Additionally, porous materials in your house such as your carpet padding and wiring will start absorbing water.

In the First 24 Hours

Following an entire day of water damage, the aforementioned porous material will begin to break down and deform. Metal objects and surfaces might become rusty and tarnished. Items that are made from wood will start to swell up from absorbing the large amounts of water. In just 24 hours, dangerous molds can start to form with the forming of spores. You will also notice a strong musty odor that is prevalent in the affected areas.

In the First 48 Hours

After two whole days of water damage, the mold starts to spread and grow more extensively with the increase in moisture. Their spores become airborne and might be absorbed into respiratory systems. At this point the studs in the wall and the wooden components of the structures in your house also begin to swell and warp. The metal structures also begin to corrode as the rusting process worsens.

After 48 hours, your carpets might not be able to be salvaged from the absorption of water.

After One Week

After a week the damage becomes more severe as the structural integrity of your house becomes compromised. The mold can turn into a biohazard that can seriously harm your family. The items in your house that have been damaged by water are no longer safe to use by this point. Repair costs would be extremely high at this stage of water damage. Unfortunately, most insurance policies will not want to cover these damages because they have to act immediately to mitigate the problem. Your house also becomes uninhabitable because of the dangerous mold and possible contamination of drinking water. The airborne spores will also make the air quality fall.

The Importance of Quick Action

Water damage can arise from many different sources. These include lousy plumbing, broken appliances, or heavy rains. The important thing is that you act on it as fast as possible. Here at SERVPRO, our experts understand that time is of the essence when dealing with water damage. Work with our team of professionals to formulate a plan to solve your water damage problems that are curated to your needs.

Factors That Can Lead to Commercial Water Damage

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

The smart thing to do in order to protect your business is to find out more about the causes of problems caused by water. The next step is to find out mitigation methods in order to solve these problems once you spot them.

It is a wise choice to have your appliances regularly maintained and take proper care of any equipment that uses water to prevent such incidences.

Faulty and Damaged Sprinkler Systems

Although sprinkler systems are extremely useful in a fire situation, it might cause problems to you If they are old and damaged. Outdated sprinklers can cause severe water damage to your building in a case where they might be accidentally turned on without the presence of a fire. These sprinklers can cause flooding in your building and lead to water damage as well, destroying your equipment, furniture and even the structural integrity of your building. Therefore, it is also a good idea to have your sprinklers updated regularly and inspected for any damage.

Choked Toilets and Lousy Sewer Lines

Choked toilets and sewer lines that are of inferior quality can cause major health problems. They contain many forms of bacteria and toxic pathogens that can affect the quality of life of the those affected. The contaminated water can also damage your precious belongings and ruin the air quality in your building. Avoid Major Mishaps by Keeping Medical Facilities Clean

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

People who work in medical facilities like hospitals or general clinics are generally trained and required to follow strict sanitation rules. Ultimately, they follow these guidelines to avoid the occurrence of germs and disease being spread throughout the facility. It is crucial to understand that these hygiene guidelines are useless if the facility is already a conducive environment for dangerous pathogens to flourish.

Sometimes, the staff of these facilities become careless with their sanitation methods and this leads to dire consequences. An example of this would be a situation in which medical personnel are understaffed and untrained for high workloads. As a result being overworked and undergoing level high levels of job stress can make them forget or neglect the importance of proper methods of waste disposal and sanitation.

On the other hand, this could also be a problem that private outpatient clinics might encounter. Although the staff in these clinics might not be overworked, they might also neglect certain common hygiene practices that are used in larger medical facilities. As they receive a much smaller flow of patients and clients, they follow a much less restrictive form of guidelines that are often lower in standard. This is especially so if the private clinics hire cleaning staff that are inexperienced or unprofessional in their work.

The absence of good sanitation practices and low levels of hygiene in these facilities is more serious than you think. This is because there is a higher risk of dangerous pathogens being spread around the facility. A patient who enters the facility for one reason might leave with another one. The spread of these germs and bacteria puts both workers and clients at risk of getting infected with a wide range of diseases. Furthermore, if these people have weaker immune systems, they might face higher risks of infections and their symptoms might be more severe. If not treated well, they can go on to spread their diseases to their own communities and cause danger to the elderly and the young.

It is a fact that poor hygiene and lousy sanitation standards also affects the lives of the elderly in homes for the aged. To avoid this problem altogether, it is very important that regardless of the type of medical facility, high standards of cleanliness and sanitation are observed strictly.

Understanding the Six Important Classes of Fire Damage

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

Fire is a devastating force of nature that both residential and commercial property owners face. Falling asleep with a lit cigarette or a kitchen fire incident can cause a home or business to sustain severe damage. If you are looking to learn more about the different classes of fire damage that plague households and businesses in the United States, you are at the right place.

Understanding the Different Classes of Fire Damage

  • Class A: Fires involving cloth, wood, rubber, paper, plastics, and other flammable solids.
  • Class B: Fires caused by flammable liquids and/or solids that can become liquefied. For example, paint, plastics, wax, oil and petrol. Fires caused by fats and cooking oils, however, are excluded from this class.
  • Class C: Fires involving flammable gases such as natural gas, butane, propane, and hydrogen.
  • Class D: Fires caused by combustible metals such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
  • Class E: In addition to factors from Classes A and B, Class E fire damage also involves electrical elements.
  • Class F: Fires that occur while cooking fats and oils. Class F fire damage, however, is significantly hotter than those found in Class B and can cause severe damage to one's property.

What are the Most Common Types of Fire Damage?

Now that you are familiar with the various classes of fire damage, it is useful to note the different types and causes of fires in the country as well.

  • Faulty heater fires

To keep warm during winter, homeowners typically utilize portable heaters. Some heater units, however, may become the catalyst of a fire, especially during the months of January, February, and December. That's why it is important to purchase heaters that come with automatic shutoff features. In addition, owners should keep these heaters at least three feet away from any flammable or combustible source.

  • Kitchen fires

Grease fires are one of the most common types of kitchen fires. A fire may occur if an individual accidentally leaves a frying pan unattended. Oftentimes, these fires can cause major property damage and serious bodily harm. To avoid appliance fires and oven fires, one should always keep the kitchen clean, never leave cooking food unattended, and unplug appliances when not in use.

  • Smoking-related fires

Cigarettes account for thousands of fire-related deaths in the United States per year. Unfortunately, smokers are not always the ones who lose their lives. That’s why smokers must be cautious and ensure that their cigarettes are completely extinguished prior to disposal. It is recommended that one smokes outside the house if drowsy, inebriated, or exhausted. In addition, smokers should use fire-resistant bins and ashtrays whenever necessary.

  • Electrical fires

Worn out breaker boxes, improper use of electrical outlets, faulty electrical wiring, lightning, and faulty appliances are some of the known causes of electrical fires. Older homes are at a greater risk because of faulty or worn wiring, which may cause shorts and sparks that ignite nearby combustibles.

It truly pays to be a well-prepared citizen or business owner as fire damage is often devastating. If you or a loved one was a fire victim, consider contacting a trusted restoration company. At SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan, we have fire restoration specialists who can restore your home or business to pre-fire condition. Our company is committed to providing superior 24-hour emergency services. Do not hesitate to schedule an appointment with us today.

Restoring Your Commercial Building Exterior

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

Spring is just around the corner. This means that many Property and Facilities Managers are frantically scrambling to clean the exterior of their buildings after the cold winter. When it comes to maintaining your commercial building exterior, it is common knowledge that the appearance of the landscaping and parking lot is important. However, there are three main areas that also require upkeep in order to restore the beautiful appearance of your commercial building. Let us take a look at them below.

Metal is a common component of every commercial building. All of them are bound to have various metal parts on their exteriors. They come in the form of handrails, monument signs, door and side windows and light bollards. When these metal parts have stainless steel or bronze finishes or are anodized or painted, their appearance can be damaged by harsh weather environments. For example, over time, bronze oxidizes and stainless steel can rust. Anodized aluminium, on the other hand, will start to corrode to form pitting or show other signs of degradation.

All these forms of damage result from chemical reactions to airborne particles or exposure to salt products. To remedy this, you can enlist the help of a qualified contractor to clean your metal surfaces. They will apply a wax barrier to protect the metal from future damage. In the event that the metal has been so severely damaged that cleaning cannot restore it, the contractor can give it a clear synthetic coating to protect the surface of the metal until you can get it serviced.

Every building needs to undergo regularly window cleaning. For most commercial buildings, it is routine. Unfortunately, it may take more than routine cleaning to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of your windows panes. This is because the irrigation systems of many commercial buildings frequently spray water onto the windows of the first floor. In the long run, this causes the accumulation of lime scale, magnesium and calcium deposits, on the window panes. Lime scale is tough to remove and the longer it is left on the window panes, the more damage it causes to the glass. To prevent irreparable damage, it is recommended to have a professional check for and remove lime scale from the windows at least once a year.

Winter inevitably covers your concrete exteriors of commercial buildings with layers of dirt and salt. This unfortunately results in the concrete appearing dirty, worn and pasty. Concrete surfaces include the building façade, sidewalks and dumpster pads to name a few. All these surfaces need to be properly cleaned to get rid of all the layers of salt, dirt and debris. However, most cleaning chemicals contain acidic chlorides that can damage the concrete by increasing its pore size. This means that water is able to seep into concrete, causing even more damage when it freezes and thaws repeatedly. To protect your concrete surfaces, it is best to hire qualified professionals to pressure wash them and make the necessary repairs. Getting professional help not only ensures that all harmful pollutants are removed, it also guarantees that your concrete surfaces look spotless and new.

As long as these three main areas receive proper care and maintenance, you can be sure that your commercial building exterior will look fantastic this spring.

Beware of These Office Fire Hazards

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

Many people think that a fire is unlikely to take place in their office. However, they are sadly mistaken. Statistics from NFPA’s 2013 report showed that from 2007 to 2011, there was an average of 3340 fires in office properties each year. This is devastating number, especially as all these fires could have been easily prevented. To help you fire-proof your office, here are some office fire hazards you should beware of.

Although offices do not contain oils, gases or naked flames, this does not mean that there is no fire risk. Offices are home to a surprising number of combustibles.

  • Dust

Many people are unaware that dust can ignite when the thing it is coating gets too hot. On top of preventing machines from overheating, it is recommended to keep office spaces well-ventilated to prevent the accumulation of dust.

  • Paper

There are hundreds of paper documents and binders lying around in every office, in cabinets, desks and waste paper baskets. It is best to keep these paper materials away from any heat sources and to empty out your waste paper baskets regularly.

  • Cleaning liquids

People often forget about the cleaning liquids that cleaning staff use to maintain the cleanliness of an office. These cleaning liquids are highly flammable and need to be stored properly to prevent an accident.

Electrical Hazards

It is not uncommon for fires to come from an electrical source. To prevent such a situation, here are the steps you can take.

  • Keep machines from overheating

You can do this by ensuring that all machines are properly ventilated to allow them to cool down. It is also a good habit to turn off these machines every night.

  • Remove broken cables

Leaving broken cables lying around the office is just asking for trouble. The moment there are sparks, an electrical fire is sure to break out.

  • Don’t overload extension cables

Everyone loves to use extension cables. However, it is important to check how much an extension cable can take before you plug in too many machines.

  • Get PAT testing

Having your PAT equipment inspected regularly will prevent any electrical faults that could lead to an electrical fire.

Don’t Block Exits

One of the most important things you need to do for a fire risk assessment is to ensure that all staff and visitors to your office can make a quick escape from the building in the event of a fire. Here is what you can do to maximise the chances of a safe exit.

  • Keep fire doors closed

It may be tempting to keep the fire doors open in a stuffy office or to allow for easy entry. However, fire doors are designed to keep fires contained to buy enough time for people to escape. This means that they must never be pinned open.

  • Keep doors clear

Never pile stocks or other belongings in front of doors. Doors must always be kept clear to allow for easy entry and exit in any emergency.

  • Keep corridors clear

To allow everyone to leave the building as quickly and efficiently as possible, corridors must be kept clear. If there are piles of office paper or binders in an already small space, they will become obstacles that impede an escape.

Now that you are aware of the common office fire hazards, you can take the necessary steps to remove them to keep you and your staff safe.

What Should You Do If A Grease Fire Erupts In Your Home?

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

Anyone who has ever experienced a flare-up in their kitchen knows very well how scary it can be. Grease fires are ten times more terrifying. They usually occur when the temperature of your cooking oil gets too high. In such cases, the oil will start to boil before starting to smoke. If the temperature is not reduced soon after that point, the cooking oil catches fire, resulting in a grease fire.

Grease fires are far more dangerous than regular fires and are much harder to put out. They can erupt suddenly and cause a huge amount of damage within the span of minutes. Trying to extinguish them the same way you would a normal fire can make a grease fire worse.

That’s why it is important to know how to deal with them if you ever have the misfortune of encountering one. Here are some tips on what to do and when you should contact a professional in the event of a grease fire in your home.

What Not to Do

In the event of a regular fire, it is okay to use to water to extinguish the flames. However, this should never be done in the case of a grease fire as the consequences are highly dangerous. When water is thrown onto a grease fire, it causes the oil to spread and splash, spreading the flames. The water will also be instantly flash-boiled into steam by the extreme heat, causing a small explosion that will send flaming oil droplets everywhere.

You may have heard of using baking soda to put out a grease fire. However, it is not a good idea to use any kind of powder type substances to put out a grease fire. Firstly, it is dangerous to get close enough to the fire to apply the powder. Secondly, it is difficult to cover the fire with enough powder to extinguish it. Last but not least, certain household powder substances can be ignited, making the whole situation worse.

Putting Out a Grease Fire

You may not be able to use water or baking soda but there are other ways to extinguish a grease fire in your kitchen. The first thing you should do is to turn off your heating source. Next, before the fire spreads outside of your pan or pot, cover it with a metal lid or cookie sheet. You must never use a glass lid as the intense lid could cause it to shatter, sending glass shards flying everywhere.

If the grease fire becomes too big and you have a class B chemical fire extinguisher at home, your best chance is to try to hose the grease fire down with it.

If none of these techniques are effective, you should evacuate the building immediately and call 911.

Containing the Damage

5/30/2019 (Permalink)

We take mold jobs very seriously here at SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan. Pictured here is one of our job site’s that was facing a growth. We contained the mold to one room. The sheet prevents the and continuous spreading. Once the area is contained we then use antimicrobial sprays to stop the mold in its tracks. Unfortunately mold does not hold back. It spread to numerous boxes and bins that were not able to be saved. Fortunately, for the client we were able to salvage a good amount of items that were unaffected. We sprayed these items as well as they were exposed to the mold spores. Once the items were cleaned we separated them from the containment to prevent further contamination. How to Prevent a Fire From Starting in Your Home

5/8/2019 (Permalink)

There is a long list of causes when it comes to home fires. They're beginning to become a commonality. When you're victim of a house fire you lose everything; all the memories you've made, burnt to a crisp.

Some practices to preventing a fire in your home are as follows:

    • Make sure everything is switched OFF and unplugged
    • Check/Inspect your chimney annually
    •  Keep comforters and anything flammable away from heaters
    • Test fire alarms/ replace batteries frequently
    • Never smoke in the home
    • Keep a spoon or spatula as a reminder when cooking/ do not leave stove tops unattended when lit

It is widely recommended that families practice a fire escape route in the event a fire does occur. No one sees a fire coming and it's best you know what plan of action to take in case you're faced with one.

In the event your home has endured a fire, call SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan at 212-564-6365 and we'll make it, "Like it never even happened."

Fire Damage In Commercial Building

As you can see in the picture we have a different point of view from the building and there is soot damage present on the flooring. This is shown by the darker color on the floor and the foot prints shown within them. SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan went in to this job and before we even put a single piece of equipment down we assured the business owner that this was nothing new to us.

Mold Removal VS. Mold Remediation

4/11/2018 (Permalink)

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy.

To learn more about our mold remediation process.

  • Step 1: Emergency Contact 1-800-SERVPRO
  • Step 2: Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
  • Step 3: Mold Containment
  • Step 4: Air Filtration
  • Step 5: Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
  • Step 6: Cleaning Contents and Belongings
  • Step 7: Restoration
  • When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

    • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
    • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

The Best Time to Sell a House

4/4/2017 (Permalink)

Just like there’s a magic day to buy a plane ticket, there’s a specific month when you should try to sell your house: May.

It is said that spring time may be the best time to sell your house. Home selling and home buying are at peak during this season.

In a new study, researchers at Zillow found that homes listed between May 1 through May 15 sold, on average, around 18.5 days faster than homes that weren’t listed during that timeframe. Homes that sold in the first half of May were also purchased for about 1 percent more than the average listing, which translates to a premium of about $1,700.

If you are thinking about buying or selling your house, spring may be the best time of the year to start making preparations.

Spring is here!

4/4/2017 (Permalink)

Spring is in the air ladies and gentlemen! Here comes the blooming flowers and beautiful weather. However, along with saying goodbye to winter, we also have to welcome sniffles and sneezes. Yes, allergy season is here as well, unfortunately. While others are frolicking in the spring breeze, there are those who are stopping at their local drug stores for allergy medication. For those who have to take extra precautions during this time of the year, here are some tips to make spring enjoyable rather than bearable.

- Laundry, laundry, laundry! After being outside pollen may stick to clothing and the skin/hair. Be sure to wash clothing after being outside!
- For homeowners: Make sure to mow your lawn! Take care of those pesky weeds and other flowers that release pollen.
- Keep windows and doors closed during days where there are high pollen levels.
- Dehumidifiers and air filters in your home may be very helpful!
- Clean, clean, clean!

Have a wonderful spring everyone!

NJAA Toys for Tots

3/10/2017 (Permalink)

During the month of December, we had the pleasure of sponsoring the annual NJAA Toys for Tots. The drop location was at the Meadowlands Exposition Center at Secaucus. Toys for Tots is a wonderful program by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Their mission is to obtain new toys during the winter months to give away to less fortunate children in your local neighborhoods. This is a great mission that allows our struggling children to be able to have new gifts during Christmas. For this special event we allowed children to come up by groups of two’s and pick out toys of their liking. Once the toys were picked we personally handed it out to them. Seeing the smiles on their faces was an unforgettable memory and we here at SERVPRO were grateful to be a part of this lovely mission

Real SERVPRO Hero Spotlight

3/7/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® of Hoboken/Union City (NJ) Recently, my elderly mother and I experienced a vertical flood stemming from a broken water main pipe in the third floor condo above us. Hours went by as plumbers inside and the town water department outside tried to stop the flow of water. Needless to say, gravity brought that water straight down into our first floor condo! We cannot praise enough the SERVPRO® team who came to our rescue and stayed with us each difficult step of our month-long odyssey! Production Manager Damon Tosada came that fateful night along with Raheem Coleman. Raheem stayed hours assessing damage, performing triage in the most apparent affected areas, setting up equipment, etc. The next day dawned early with Team Leader Steve Roberts and Raheem at our door with big smiles and assurances that we were not to worry they would take care of us...and they did. Bryan Wartel joined them as the remediation days continued. Packing us out of our home and then back in four weeks later was done with the utmost care. My mother is almost 89 and team leader Steve, Raheem, and Bryan treated her as they would their own grandmothers! Damon worked hard on the management end keeping us updated while coordinating between the condo association, insurance companies, remodeling team, etc. I believe God answered my prayer for the right people to help us. They were knowledgeable, strong, compassionate and respectful both of us and our property. Please let Damon Tosada, Steve Roberts, Raheem Coleman, and Bryan Wartel know just how much they were and are appreciated. As the SERVPRO® Franchise Owner and the GM, I thought you’d like to hear what strong assets these men are to your company. They are the role models for how it should be done. I’ve attached pictures so you can see your A-TEAM in action! With much appreciation we offer our heartfelt thanks.

It's Time to Clean up the Leaves!

Did you know leaving wet leaves on the ground can have serious consequences?

We're currently in hurricane season so in other words there's going to be a lot of rain in the coming months. While the colors of the leaves are lovely to look at be sure you don't leave them on the ground for too long. Believe it or not wet leaves can actually cause mold!

Mold reproduces dark and wet areas; this is exactly why they can thrive underneath wet leaves. The leaves need to be picked up and properly disposed to prevent this outcome.

In the event that you do find yourself faced with a case of mold there's no need to panic. SERVPRO of Hoboken / Union City specializes in mold remediation so we've got you covered!

Let's Clean up the Mess!

Biohazard material on the floor.

Our services go beyond just fire, soot, and mold. Our crew here at SERVPRO welcomes any challenge presented our way. For instance, the situation pictured was a call we received. Blood classifies as a bio-hazardous job. Once we are called we send a crew over to the scene to assess the damage and see what more needs to be done. We take pride in being well-equipped to handle these type of situations. At this job, we sent our crew in with all of the protection needed to keep safe and they cleaned up the stains presented in the picture. There's never a job that's too much of anything for us to handle here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/ Union City. Our customer was very pleased with the results they received once our crew was done.

Sewage Draining

Sewage build up.

Our crew here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/ Union City work day in and day out to provide our customers with the best service to ensure the best results. One of our clients had a case of sewer damage and called us to help with the problem. You can see in the picture where most of the damage had taken place. The sewage reached a couple of inches, which is never a good thing. Our crew set up a draining system with trash pumps that moved the sewage from the property and placed it where it belongs, in the sewer. These types of jobs are never the prettiest but our crew is trained well and knows exactly what to do in these circumstances. Our client was very pleased with the results they received.

Out with the old, in with the new!

New canvases on the walls.

Here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City and SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan we want to make sure when our employees come to work they are entering a comfortable environment that in a way makes you feel at home. We want our office space here to be a clean and calming space for our employees to get work done. In recent weeks our General Manager, Jeffrey Lupo, took steps to get the office feeling more like a home than a work space. We added portraits to the walls as you can see in the picture. These photographs in particular allow for the viewer to be transported to a different setting while still sitting at work! This way we all can have the best of both worlds.

Photo of our team

This is a photo of our team here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City and SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan. Without each and every one of these individuals we would not be where we are today. Each person on our teams serves a vital role in our business. Think of it this way, to build a house you need a strong foundation that you know is going to last you a long time. That's how we view our team. They make up the foundation that holds our SERVPRO together.

We just want to extend a sincere thank you to ALL of our employees. Whether you're in the office or on the field, you are an important asset to our team. Not all of our employees were able to make this photo, but this thank you is extended to everyone pictured and not pictured.

Basement Cleaning

Basement after our crew went in and cleaned it up,

Cleanings are one of our services we offer here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City and Lower Manhattan. Not pictured in the picture on the right is the basement of this property had a great deal of clutter the customer did not want to deal with. Here at SERVPRO we like nothing more than to take the stress off the shoulders of our clients. Our crew bagged up everything the client wanted to discard and took the appropriate steps to waste cleanup. Looking at the picture here on the right you can see the difference of clutter. We discarded all the unwanted items and disposed of them properly. Our client was very impressed with the level of skill our crew provided and can rest assured.

Elephant Falls Asleep After Soothing Lullaby From Caretaker

Baby elephant fast asleep by his mother

Here at SERVPRO of Hoboken/Union City and SERVPRO of Lower Manhattan we though this article by Olivia Cathcart was too sweet not to share! Take a look:

At her home in Thailand’s Elephant Nature Park, this sweet pachyderm loves nothing more than her caretaker, Sangduen "Lek", Chailert’s voice. You can tell she and Faamai have a special bondwhen Lek starts singing the elephant’s favorite lullaby. After just a few seconds of singing, the elephant pulls her friend in closer with her trunk. A few more bars, and she is on the ground, slowly dozing off for the ultimate cat nap. Faamai was born in the ENP in 2009 and known to be curious and gentle.

Decluttering kid stuff

No more stepping on LEGO'S!

• Keep them open-ended. Boxes, blocks, building things, art supplies—all these can be manipulated a million different ways.

• Make sure the toy invites the kid to play. There are far too many toys on the market that entertain, not provide the chance to play. A telltale sign (for me, anyway): they involve a lot of buttons that make noise.

• They should stand the test of time. Sure, some toys are age-specific. But most should be enjoyable by all the kids in the house, and for years at a time.

• They’re quality over quantity. I’d rather have fewer, better things. Kids play with things more, not less, when they’re given fewer options. (It’s the classic paradox of choice we face when we’re in the toothpaste aisle, forced to choose from 27 varieties. If we’re in a small store that has three, we’ll choose one and easily move on with our lives.)

Fathers Day TREAT!

6/1/2016 (Permalink)

Surprise dad with this easy Coca Cola Frozen Treat!

I thought it would be fun to serve some frozen on a stick to celebrate Dad and his favorite drink.  Let’s enjoy a traditional Coke Float Popsicle by way of ice cold Coke, vanilla ice cream….and don’t forget the cherry on top!

The key to using carbonated soda in a popsicle, is to use flat soda.  Just open the soda, pour it into a glass and let it sit an hour or more in the refrigerator, so it stays cold, but loses some of the fizz.

Traditional Coke Float Popsicles

1.       Fill popsicle mold a quarter of the way up with flat Coke. Place 1-2 tablespoons of vanilla ice cream into form, drop one maraschino cherry into the mold and pour a little more coke on top. Leave about 1/4″ on top for the popsicle to expand when it freezes.

2.       Freeze for about 1-2 hours or until mixture starts to solidify enough to hold a popsicle stick upright. Insert popsicle sticks and continue freezing popsicles for at least 5 hours, or overnight. To release popsicles run hot water on the outside of popsicle molds for a 2-3 seconds.

TIP:  if you don’t have a popsicle mold, you can use small (3-5 oz) paper cups.

Biggest Risks for Popular Summer Activities

6/1/2016 (Permalink)

Sitting on the dock

We all love the summer, but here are somethings we need to keep in mind when we head out to great adventures for this summer.

Cruise: Sprains are the most common injury for someone on a cruise, along with contusions and other superficial wounds.

  • Camping and mountain trips: Falls are the biggest threat, many due to poor decision-making, lack of skill or not being properly prepared. Dehydration is also a danger.
  • So what’s a summer-loving person to do?

  • Pack: Appropriate clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen and first aid items. Include soap, tweezers, wound gel, personal medication and items such as fever reducers, fungal creams and pain relievers.
  • Know: The level of ability of the people in your group and the environment around you.
  • Head over to redcross.org to find tips for specific situations, such as getting stung by a jellyfish or dealing with a blister.

Bonus Preparedness Points: Classes and Apps

Oh, so you’re an overachiever? Want all the safety arrows in your quiver? Get suited up with a couple more critical resources.

  • Take a Class: Prepare for the unexpected with First Aid/CPR/AED training.
  • Download Apps The Red Cross First Aid App has instant access on how to treat common emergencies as well as a hospital locator which is helpful for travelers, and the Emergency App is a single ‘go-to’ source for weather alerts and safety tips.
  • Stay safe out there, folks!

    Garden Tips

    6/1/2016 (Permalink)

    Garden Tips!

Crushed eggshells sprinkled around your flower beds or veggie gardens will prevent slugs from passing through. Crushed eggshells also provide a nice calcium supplement for vegetable beds.

Here are some other Garden tips that can save tons of time and energy.

    1. If its getting cold and you have tomatoes still ripening on the vine — save your tomatoes! Pull the plants up and bring them inside to a warm dry place. Hang them up, and the tomatoes will ripen on the vine.

    2. Keep garden vegetables from getting dirty by spreading a 1-2 inch layer of mulch (untreated by pesticides or fertilizers) around each plant. This will also help keep the weeds down.

    3. Paint the handles of your gardens tools a bright, color other than green to help you find them amongst your plants. You can also keep a mailbox in your garden for easy tool storage.

    4. Compost needs time to integrate and stabilize in the soil. Apply two to three weeks prior to planting.

    5. There is an easy way to mix compost into your soil without a lot of back breaking work: Spread the compost over your garden in the late fall, after all the harvesting is done. Cover with a winter mulch such as hay or chopped leaves and let nature take its course. By spring, the melting snow and soil organisms will have worked the compost in for you.

    6. Like vining vegetables, but don’t have the room? Train your melons, squash, and cucumbers onto a vertical trellis or fence. Saves space and looks pretty too.

    7. Garden vegetables that become over-ripe are an easy target for some pests. Remove them as soon as possible to avoid detection.

    8. Onions are ready to harvest when the tops have fallen over. Let the soil dry out, harvest, and store in a warm, dry, dark place until the tops dry. Cut off the foliage down to an inch, then store in a cool, dry area.

    9. Over watering is worse than under watering. It is easier to revive a dry plant than try to dry out drowned roots.

    10. When planting a flower or vegetable transplant, deposit a handful of compost into each hole. Compost will provide transplants with an extra boost that lasts throughout the growing season.

    11. Insects can’t stand plants such as garlic, onions, chives and chrysanthemums. Grow these plants around the garden to help repel insects.

    12. Plants will do best if they are well suited to your growing area. Take some time to read up and choose plants accordingly.

    13. For easy peas, start them indoors. The germination rate is far better, and the seedlings will be healthier and better able to fight off pests and disease.

    14. If you’re short on space, garlic, leeks and shallots make excellent container plants. They tend to have few insect or disease problems and don’t require much room for roots.

    15. Another reason to use natural and organic fertilizers and soil amendments: earthworms love them! Earthworms are extremely beneficial in the vegetable garden; increasing air space in the soil and leaving behind worm castings. Do what you can to encourage earthworms in your soil.

    16. Water your garden in the early morning to conserve moisture loss and to help avoid powdery mildew and other fungal diseases that are often spread by high humidity levels.

    17. Some vegetables actually become better after a first frost, including kale, cabbage, parsnips, carrots, and Brussels sprouts.

    18. When transplanting tomatoes, cover the stem with soil all the way up to the first set of leaves. This greatly encourages root growth, making a stronger, healthier plant.

    19. Healthy soil means a thriving population of microbes, earthworms and other organisms. A soil that has “good tilth” will produce robust garden plants that are better able to resist pests and disease.

    20. A simple five percent increase in organic material (compost) quadruples the soil’s ability to store water.
